Council approves monument location at museum By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron County Council has approved a location for the new light -armoured vehicle (LAV) monument destined for the Huron County Museum. In her report, presented to council at its June 8 committee of the whole meeting, Meighan Wark, Director of Cultural Services, suggested that the vehicle be placed on the north side of the museum in close proximity to the existing Sherman tank monument. The suggested location is also within viewing distance of the museum's military gallery. One suggestion had been a location closer to the entrance of the museum, Wark said, making it more visible from North Street, but that would be in front of the museum's school house building — which itself is an artifact. Wark told councillors that the only concern with the location is minor in nature. Underground hydro to the museum runs near the proposed location, so she said the exact place of the monument may be moved slightly, but it will remain in the same general vicinity as laid out in her report. Council first approved supporting the Goderich Legion in its efforts to secure the monument for the Huron County Museum at an April committee of the whole meeting. Council opted to provide $20,000 to the project. Staff then subsequently met with Legion representative Paul Thorne on May 10 to discuss potential locations before a final decision was made. Council approved Wark's suggestion to place the monument on the north side of the museum, facing Trafalgar Street. BUY? SELL?
