Church uses donation to support various groups A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 takes hold, it takes but a moment to list all the good things of life. So often we mutter about things that really are not our concern or things that are out of our control, it's all attitude. As I'm remembering the past few weeks, lots of things made me smile, again. So with an attitude of gratitude I smile and think of the store signs on the Square in Goderich that say "welcome" to As the days of summer progress people in Arabic. Driving back from and the real life of a retired person Hallville recently the "air conditioned" sign on a derelict motel with the doors and windows long gone, needed a second look and a chuckle. A feisty dandelion got a big "ahhh" this spring as it blew in the breezes by the Anglican Church, well snuggled into the cracked bark 10 feet up the tree. The tractors and butterflies, flowers and comic book heroes painted on the faces of the young set last Saturday at the Lions supper had many smiling. The "Welcome Back Fort McMurray" sign hung from the ladder trucks by Helping out A significant donation was made to the Brussels United Church in honour of Ida Evans in 2003 and the church is making that money work by using the interest from the donation to support local projects. Recently, $5,000 was donated to Camp Menesetung, $1,000 to Fort McMurray through the United Church of Canada and $5,000 was donated, as shown above, to the Brussels Morris and Grey Community Pool. Shown are, from left, Brussels United Church Minister Gary Clark, United Church representative Ralph Watson, Abi Corbett and Jacoby and Nicole Noble from the Brussels Recreation Board. (Denny Scott photo) At the Branch Legion Fish Fry set for July 1 By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a busy week at the Brussels Legion Branch for fish fry dinners. Three were booked for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. It was a lot of work, but it was handled by the very capable members of the Branch. Tuesday the crew went to Atwood Presbyterian Church to feed 260 people. The fish was prepared by Deb Cann, Jo -Ann McDonald and Sandra Josling. The crew included Deb and Eric Ross, Judy Lee, Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith, Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins and Daisy Schmidt. They had a good day once they got started and things flowed nicely. Thursday, the new crew went to Wroxeter to feed 170 folks. The crew consisted of Norm Dobson, George Adams, Catrina Josling, Judy Lee, Jo -Ann McDonald and Daisy Schmidt. they had a good day once they got started and things flowed nicely. The third fry of the week was in Hensall for the Legion. The crew consisted of Jo -Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Sandra Josling and Lloyd and Mabel Glanville. They fed 170 people as well and had a good day. Lots of work for this week and now a break for a bit. The Brussels Legion's own fish fry will be held Canada Day so mark it on your calendar. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 15 -and -a -half tables of players attend the day. The winners were: Edna McLellan and Judy Hahn, 74; second, Joann MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 73; third, May and Lillian; low, Doreen and Judy, 44; lone hands, Hazel McGonigle and Janet Davies, seven. The Sunday night dance had nearly 70 people enjoying the music of the Tri Country Band. Everyone is very pleased with the new washrooms and glad they don't have to go downstairs any more. Finally, I'm smiling as I think of Ida Evans, a lady who lived her life in Grey and Brussels as a kind generous soul. When she died in 2001 money was given to many places in Brussels that Ida saw as important — to name but a few, the church, the library, the institute, horticulture, the arena and others. To keep Ida's legacy alive, some of the United Church money, which was well used over the years brought smiles to others last week. To Camp Menesetung and their accessibility project to the Brussels pool for repairs and another smile to Fort McMurray rebuild. Giving hope and love to the world with time or money or smiles, just makes that corner just a bit nicer place to live. The Farmers' Market is a busy spot on Friday afternoons. Good food, lots of it grown here and the rest just looks too good to resist.
