The Huron Perth District Women's
Institutes held their 12th District
Annual at the Brussels Legion on
May 25 with 63 in attendance. The
theme this year was "Just a Slice of
W.I." Hostesses were Majestic &
Walton branches.
Yvonne Knight from Majestic
branch welcomed everyone to
Brussels for the day. The
Ratification of the District Directors
was conducted by District President
Barb Elg.
In Memoriam was led by Helen
Anderson and Beth Forrest in
memory of the six members who
were deceased this past year. A
flower was placed in a vase as each
name was read.
In her president's remarks, Barb
shared her thoughts on "Just a Slice
of W.I." A slice is just a thin piece
cut from a larger piece. Each Branch
is an important slice of the whole
W.I. pie and each branch brings
something different.
Lynda Alexander of Carry On
branch shared some of the upcoming
plans for the 2016 International
Plowing Match including the quilt
show on Aug. 19-20.
Guest speaker Elizabeth Hawkins
from the Huron Perth Agriculture &
Water Festival gave the members an
overall view of the festival held each
year in Seaforth in April. The
schools from Huron and Perth
Counties have the opportunity to
send their Grade 4 students. They are
given a hands-on education
regarding water and agriculture in
combination. It is the only festival
that does such an educational format
this way.
Elizabeth thanked the membership
for their donation as it helps with the
busing costs for the students. There
are usually 300 students in
attendance.
The very talented Hillier family
from the Brussels area entertained
with their wonderful musical voices
and some played an instrument as
well.
Following a delicious lunch served
by the Brussels Legion ladies,
Ronna Lee Johnson introduced the
guests in attendance from the other
areas and districts. The roll
call: What is your Branch's slice of
W.I.? was answered by all 12
branches. Answers included: fun,
fellowship, community involvement,
ROSE programs, local 4-H clubs
and focusing on youth in the
community, etc.
Eleanor Elg from Lily Dempsey
branch conducted the installation of
officers for the ensuing year 2016-
2017.
Margaret Mclnroy from Walton
branch reported on the progress and
activities happening with the
International Plowing Match being
held in Walton, Sept. 19-23, 2017.
A reminder for the members is the
Guelph Area convention scheduled
for Oct. 5 in Milverton at the Perth
East Recreation Complex.
The invitation for the 13th District
Annual was given by Barb Grube
from the Maple Leaf branch for May
31, 2017 in the Listowel Agricultural
Hall.
