Last weekend was a big one on the Blyth calendar as the village welcomed hundreds of
visitors for the annual Barn Dance weekend, featuring a number of concerts on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday. The main event, however, was Saturday night's Barn Dance concert,
emceed by long-time CKNX employee Jim Swan, who is seen here with members of the Barn
Dance Historical Society just before the music got started on the main stage. (Shawn Loughlin

Blyth, Brussels hold joint service
Blyth United Church and Brussels
United Church held a joint service in
Brussels on Sunday, May 29.
Greeting worshippers at the door
was Ralph Watson. Everyone was
asked to write the name of someone
on a ribbon from whom they would
like a special prayer.
Kathy Workman welcomed
everyone to church on Sunday. She
drew everyone's attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin. Rev. Gary Clark invited one
of the Sunday school children from
each church to light the Christ
candle. The hymn, "Lord Prepare
Me" was sung. A video clip about
memories and emotions was
watched for a few minutes.
The opening prayer was said
responsively with the sign language
as part of the response. Rev. Clark
invited everyone to greet one
another. The scripture reading was
from Corinthians 12: 12-31. The
choir sang the anthem, "You Alone
Are My Bread and Wine of Life".
Rev. Clark's message to the
congregation was "We Are One
Body with Many Parts". Rev. Clark
had been at London conference last
week and told a story from
conference. Rev. Dr. John Pentland
was a minister in a church in the
Calgary area. He was trying to bring
the church back and save it from
closing. He was trying to find a way
to invite the homeless into the
church with respect and acceptance.
Peter was one of those people who
came to church. He lived in a
dumpster around the corner from the
church. Peter was accepted by the
congregation even though he didn't
smell that good at times. Peter came
into an inheritance and asked John to

look after his money for him. Peter
asked John to take $40 and give to
the firefighters of Fort McMurray.
Peter wanted to give back. Later on
Rev. John Pentland was recognized
by someone he had met. This person
gave John $40 to give to Peter
because Peter had been so generous.
When John tried to give it to Peter,
Peter told him to also give it to the
firefighters and this would double
the money.
Rev. Clark also told the story of
being in Tennessee and meeting a
very nice person but he had a gun
and so did others attending. This
made Rev. Clark a little uneasy since
he was not used to guns. Then this
person handed him a necklace with a
cross that he had carved. He told
Rev. Clark that he had been looking
for the right person to give this to
and it was him.
These stories show that it takes
different kinds of people to make a
world. It is not just about us but we
feel connected to the rest of the
world. This is God's table and Christ
invited anyone to come and join.
The hymn, "Let Us With Tongues
Employ" was sung followed by the
prayer of consecration and the
singing of the Lord's Prayer.
Everyone was invited to come to the
front to receive the bread which was
dipped in wine, served by members
of both churches. The hymn, "Deep
In Our Hearts" was sung. The
offering was received followed by
the offertory response, "Your Work,
O God, Needs Many Hands," the
offertory prayer and the prayers for
the people.
The last hymn, "Blest Be The Tie
That Binds" was followed by the
benediction and the singing of "God
Be With You 'Til We Meet Again".
Everyone was invited downstairs
for lunch as this was the last Sunday
for Sunday school at Brussels
United. Everyone enjoyed
hamburgers, hot dogs and salads
which were supplied by Brussels and
desserts supplied by Blyth.

Live near to God
(Robert Murray M'Cheyne)
Prayer is the link that connects earth with Heaven! Live near to God, and all things
will appear little to you in comparison with eternal realities!
When you gaze upon the sun — it makes everything else dark. When you taste
honey — it makes everything else tasteless. Likewise, when your soul feeds on
Jesus — it takes away the sweetness of all earthly things — pride, pleasure, fleshly
lusts, all lose their sweetness.
"Let us fix our eyes on Jesus!" Hebrews 12:2. Keep a continued gaze! So will the
world be crucified to you — and you unto the world!
