Town sale a success
A NOTE FROM BETTY
Village -wide
On Saturday, Brussels residents opened their basements, attics and garages to the
community for the annual village -wide yard sale. An annual tradition that coincides with the
yard sale is the St. John's Anglican Church barbecue, which was carried out by Bill Clark, left,
and Don Sholdice, among others. (Shawn Loughlin Photo)

Branch hosts FWIO district event
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the May general
meeting. The Comrades were
pleased to welcome Jasmine Vader
of the Brussels Leo Club, along with
her mother Lori, to the meeting.
Jasmine presented a cheque to
President Jo -Ann McDonald in
support of the accessibility project.
The monies were raised by the Leos
by helping at the Lions Club
breakfast this spring. The normal
business was discussed and reports
given. Installation of the officers for
the upcoming year was performed
by Comrade Glenn Bridge. A
donation was approved for the Fort
McMurray Fire Fund.
Comrade Glenn is still looking for
help with the euchres on Saturday
afternoons, bi-weekly, for about
three hours from noon until 3 p.m. A
commitment of once every two
months would be appreciated to take
turns with others. Helpers for the
fish fry dinners, or at the dances, or
on committees are all needed and
welcomed.
Wednesday, the Huron Perth
District annual meeting of the
Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario was held at the Branch.
They started their meeting at
10 a.m. and before lunch, they
enjoyed entertainment by the Hillier
family. The 64 ladies enjoyed a ham
and scalloped potato dinner prepared
by Deb Cann, Jo -Ann McDonald,
Mabel Glanville and Mary
Bradshaw. The meeting resumed
after dinner until mid-afternoon.
PRO Chair Jo -Ann McDonald
attended the PRO seminar in
Harriston on Saturday morning.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 10 tables of players. Winners
were: first, Louise and Mary, 83;
second, Nancy and Shirley, 80; third,
Joann MacDonald and Dorothy
Carter, 73; low, Lorrie and Flo, 41
and lone hands, Carol and Susan.
The Sunday night dance had a nice
crowd of 64 people enjoying the
music of the Country Versatiles. It
was nice to use the new washrooms
upstairs. Comrades Judy Lee, Mary
Bradshaw, Mabel Glanville, LeeAnn
McDonald and Jo -Ann McDonald
looked after the evening.
The Legion year-end is May 31
and we begin a new year on the right
foot with the accessibility project
nearly completed. A few little things
need to be done, but most is done. A
great way to start 2016/2017 for the
Branch.

the Churches of Brussels to
celebrate and remember the lives of
those who have passed in the last
year and rest in Brussels Cemetery.
It is not just for Legion members but
for all of the community of Brussels
and area. Everyone is invited to
attend and to bring a lawn chair. We
honour all who have passed during
war and in life of our area. All
churches are asked to have a
representative in attendance to read
the names of their congregation who
rest in Brussels Cemetery. Please
plan on attending.

The business of spring was very
evident over the weekend in
Brussels. For me the weekend was
not in Brussels but in London with
Jeanette Boynton and the United
Church London Conference annual
meeting. So a good time for
everyone it seems.
The weather was great for folks
puddling about the garage sale
spots, it was too hot to do many
other things, so lots of people and
action were on the streets. Food is
usually part of the fun, so the
Anglican folks were outside doing
their culinary feats and the
restaurants kept their end up as the
folks from all over were well-fed as
they celebrated their new treasures.
The 5R's had a busy afternoon as
they lived their mission — reduce,
reuse, reclaim, recycle and rejoice as
the unsold items from the village
sales came to find new life at the
store. Some of the things will be re-
cycled as they will be sent on to
places that need items now. So a lot
of things were shifting on the
weekend.
That leads me into my church
weekend where our theme speaker
