Walton WI marks 60th anniversary with celebration
work with its neighbouring chapters
to help mark the occasion.
The group had brought together a
significant amount of history from
its past to not only recall what once
was, but also to remind the group of
how the time the branch was formed
also looked.
Among the information provided
was the history of the branch, which
included one the first fundraisers the
group held which was a donation
from each woman of one penny per
inch of waist size, a group of women
touring the Huron County
Courthouse getting stuck in an
elevator in 1957, tours of local
industry and skills learned through
the group.
The WI members also brought
information together regarding how
it had supported the community
including educational opportunities,
flower planting, the creation of the
Medical Clinic in Brussels,
operating Walton Community Hall,
working for the blue box initiative,
tree planting, baking, involvement in
local agricultural societies and
initiatives, as well as scores of
donations to many community
groups and efforts.
Marking the occasion
The Walton Women's Institute (WI) celebrated its 60th anniversary last Wednesday night. The
night included memories, merrymaking and cake to celebrate the longevity of the club. Shown

The Walton Women's Institute
(WI) celebrated its 60th anniversary
at a special event last week with
some of its original members,
representatives from other branches
and some special guests.
The club, which was formed in
1956 with 40 original members,
filled Walton Community Hall with
friends to mark the special occasion
where they shared stories,
reminisced on the group's past and
activities and marked the occasion
with a birthday cake for the WI.
"It was a good day," said member
Margaret Mclnroy. "We had a lot of
great guests and it was fun"
President Ruth Axtmann
welcomed everyone to the event and
announced that the club was very
excited to have Margaret Byl, the
President of the Federated Women's
Institutes of Ontario (FWIO) present
to give a certificate to the group as
well as to give Marjory Humphries a
pin and certificate marking her 60
years with the organization.
Huron East Councillor Joe Steffler
brought greetings on behalf of
Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan and Huron County
Warden Paul Gowing. Greetings
were also extended on behalf of
Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson's
office.
Mclnroy said there were a number
of representatives from several local
WI branches on hand to mark the
event, which was nice because, as
the host chapter for the 100th
International Plowing Match next
year, the group wants to try and
The Original Six
When the Walton Women's Institute (WI) marked its 60th
anniversary at the Walton Community Hall last Wednesday,
it looked back on the world as it was when the club was
formed. The WI has six surviving members from that first
year and three were able to make the event. From left:

area and Marjory Humphries of Walton. Absent are Marjory
