Huron East releases firefighters to Alberta if needed By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Huron East Council has approved sending three local firefighters to Fort McMurray to assist in the ongoing wildfire disaster if necessary. Council approved sending Jason Kellington of Brussels, Steve Boyer of Grey and James Wilbee of Seaforth, in the event they're needed, with Huron East picking up the costs. In his report, Huron East Fire Chief Marty Bedard said he asked for volunteers on May 9 and received responses from 22 Huron East firefighters interested in volunteering their services. The three were chosen by Bedard after careful consideration and discussion with district chiefs. "I am overwhelmed by the interest shown from our firefighters," Bedard said in his report. "When the need arises, they are always willing to assist." Bedard said that costs to Huron East would simply total a per diem Powering up Alycia Coultes, a student at Wingham's Maitland River Elementary School, took centre stage last week as the school held its annual track and field meet. She took centre stage at least for this throw, that saw Coultes put her all behind it in an effort to achieve maximum distance. This event takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from July 5 until Aug. 25. You could play the role of a lunatic, thief or vagrant who occupied a cell at 181 Victoria Street North and tell visitors about your time Behind the Bars. If interested, turn yourself in by calling the Huron Historic Gaol at 519-524-6971 or by e -mailing Madelaine Higgins at mhiggins @huroncounty.ca Volunteers will meet individually with event co-ordinators and attend training sessions in June and July. The Huron Historic Gaol operated as a county jail from 1841 until 1972, and is now a designated national historic site. Look for the large road sign on Highway 21 (Victoria Street North). The gaol's regular hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. You can find out more information about Behind the Bars and other summer activities at the Huron Historic Gaol by calling 519- 524-6971. of $182.35 per firefighter per day. They would travel to Alberta on a flight chartered by Bruce Power and must supply their own protective equipment. The total cost to Huron East, Bedard said, if all three firefighters were sent for the maximum of 10 days would be $1,835.50 per firefighter for a total of over $5,400. Council approved the request, although Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight relayed the thoughts of Bedard that as fires have come under control in the province, it was unlikely the Huron East firefighters would need to be deployed. oar N. #1 And We Still Try Harder Recent circulation figures show The Citizen has the " highest circulation in the northern part of LobHuron County, #3 in the entire county.
