PEOPLE AROUND
LONDESBORO

Londesborough United Church
held its postponed Songfest on
Sunday, May 15. The change of date
for this 36th concert may have
slightly affected the size of the
audience but definitely not their
appreciation of the groups who
performed. All entertainers were
warmly received. This yearly event
is organized by Londesborough
United's choir director/organist Barb
Bosman. Mark Mitchell emceed the
evening.
The opening act was "The
Children's Glister Choir". This is a
new group of young folk from the
area who are led by Suzanne
MacVicar of Auburn. Their
accomplished pianist is Bailey
Porter, a former student of
Suzanne's. These well disciplined
young folk sang with a lot of heart
and added some dance moves as
well. Their opening number was
"We're Going to Make Music
Tonight" and they truly did. They
closed out their time with a round,
"Go Now In Peace".
The Honey Sweethearts, a
returning group, feature the
members of the Dawe family. Eight-
year-old Ava, is the lead singer. She
has a strong voice and a comfortable
stage presence. Father Steve
accompanies Ava on guitar. Mom
Heather keeps a drum beat and
handles two younger children, Molly
and Felix, who add some vocals and
use spoons and a shaker. Their
performance had a definite Canadian
theme with numbers like "This Land
Is Our Land" and "Sugar Time". Ava
has a great future in music.
Shelley MacPhee-Haist and
Elizabeth Haist from Clinton, have a
long background in music and enjoy
sharing their talent with others and
singing together. Accompanied by
Barb Bosman, this mother and
daughter joined their powerful
voices in numbers like "The Power
of Love" and "His Eye Is on the
Sparrow".
An easy listening quintet "Country
Serenade" is a well known area
group who demonstrated various
talents along with vocals. John
McDowell plays guitar, Jim
Flannigan strums a banjo, Cal
Gatsby blows a mean saxophone,
Jim Scott plays fiddle and Elaine
Scott offers piano accompaniment.
Their first set included "The Fergus
Reel", "Stormy Weather" and "I
Don't Know Why".
Rounding out the program was a
duo from Londesborough United.
Minister Terry Fletcher has a rich
musical background and is an
accomplished guitarist. Tom Pollard
shares his vocal talent as a member
of the senior choir. They made
wonderful music together in
numbers like "Four Strong Winds"
and "If You Could Read My Mind",
a Gordon Lightfoot tune.
It was a most pleasant way to
spend a spring evening.
FROM LONDESBORO
Sunday School to lead service
Londesborough United Church
celebrated Trinity Sunday on May 22
with the Sacrament of Communion.
Helping Rev. Fletcher with the
serving of the elements were Cheryl
Trewartha, Bev Riley and Lawrence
Bergsma. The senior choir sang the
communion hymn "We Gather
Here". Trinity or Triune means
`being three in one'. In keeping with
the theme aspects of the service were
taken from suggestions in the book
"A Song of Faith". For as Rev.
Fletcher explained, only through
faith can one accept the idea of three
in one.
Terry used two easily understood
examples with the children to explain
the Trinity concept. Water as a liquid
can be poured into a glass. Water
heated becomes steam and frozen
becomes ice. But all three are water.
The children know Terry as a
minister but others know him as a
father and still others know him as a
guitar player. But he is still one man.
Just as people can be known as many
things God can also be known as
Jesus, the son, and the Holy Spirit.
For his message to the adults
gathered that morning, Terry chose
the scripture passage from John 14
and 16. The responsive psalm was
Psalm 119.
Since ancient times, solving the
mysteries of math has involved
various strategies. The idea and
acceptance of the Triune, the
recognition that the three of the
Trinity, God in three beings, can not
be divided in Christianity, was not
accepted until the Council of Nicea.
The number three, which means
prophesy, is basic to Christianity
being noted on many Biblical
occasions. For example, Jesus rose in

Huronview to host
'come and go tea'
Notice came this week of the
passing of Phyllis Potter. Jack and
Phyllis and Bob and Ann Potter
came to the village a number of
years ago and lived side-by-side
along the highway south of the main
corner. Both brothers have since
passed away and Ann still resides in
her home. When Jack died, Phyllis
moved back to Toronto to be closer
to family. Sympathy is extended to
Ann and Phyllis' family and area
acquaintances.
On May 25, the Happy Gang
Seniors will meet for a noon potluck
at Londesborough United Church.
Area friends are invited to help
celebrate two milestone birthdays. A
'come and go tea' in the Huronview
Apartments dining room on
Saturday, May 28, from 1-3 p.m.
will honour the 100th birthday of
Hazel Watkins and the 95th birthday
of Alma Finnigan.
These sisters were both born on
May 26.
One final adjustment
A group of Central Huron Secondary School students
working with robotics held their final competition, modeled
after the board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, last week.
Robots had to gather up tennis balls from a central point.
