National United church moderator visits Brussels
Stopping for a snack
United Church of Canada moderator Jordan Cantwell,
right, stopped by the Brussels United Church bake sale at
the first Brussels Farmers' Market of the year last Friday.
Cantwell was heading out to Camp Menesetung for a youth
event with Brussels and Blyth Pastor Gary Clark. From left:

WI visits Donegal store
Members of the Majestic
Women's Institute enjoyed on a
mystery trip arranged by Kathy
Bridge on May 11. Their first stop
was at Gerber's warehouse and retail
store at Donegal. Gerber's
Workwear offers full promotional
design and printing services as well
as carrying a complete line of
quality workwear. It was fascinating
to see how quickly logos, names or
pictures could be embroidered onto
many different products. Fifteen
people work within the building.
The name LUCY was printed out
with 4,000 stitches.
Everyone enjoyed a tasty lunch at
Vicki's in Listowel. Following
A correction
In last week's story regarding the
Little Ambassador and Junior
Ambassador competitions at this
year's Brussels Fall Fair, two
mistakes were made.
The essay contest for both
competitions will carry the theme
"Finding Fun at the Brussels Fall
Fair" while the theme of the fair
itself is "Blue Jeans and Country
Dreams".
In addition, while the Little
Ambassador and Junior Ambassador
age ranges (eight to 10 and 11 to 13
respectively) were correct, a
potential ambassador must be 17 in
order to be nearly 18 by the
following August to be eligible to
travel to the Canadian National
Exhibition.
The Citizen apologizes for the
errors.

lunch, President Yvonne Knight read
a poem entitled "If'. Kathy Bridge
distributed the May newsletter.
Motions were made to give
donations to the Brussels and Grey
Township Fire Departments and to
the Alberta Relief Fund.
The roll call was answered by
telling where you would like to visit,
if money was no object. The District
Annual that the Walton and Majestic
Women's Institute are hosting on
May 25 was discussed. Members
were reminded of our invitation to
the 60th anniversary of Walton
Women's Institute on May 18.
Happy birthday wishes were
extended to Kathy Bridge and Marie
McCutcheon. Alfreida Klassen won
the fundraising prize for ACWW
donated by Kathy Bridge.
The next stop was at the
Community Living building in
Listowel. Carolyn Bender and
Shanda Scot gave an interesting
presentation on their work. The
program is partially funded by the
government and governed by a
Board of Directors. Numerous
fundraisers are planned throughout
the year. The main goal of
Community Living is to help anyone
18 years of age or older with a
disability, to have their own
independence. Staff treat everyone
with respect and dignity working on
a one-to-one basis with each person.
A vote of thanks was given to
Kathy Bridge for planning such an
interesting day.

Getting this column ready on a
Friday kicks the mind off Monday
and resets it to Friday. And what a
lovely day it is, the sun shining and
May is at its best. So that means the
market opens and a long weekend is
starting. Oh what a lovely day.
Opening day of anything is always
fun. Will things go as planned? Will
the plans be the right ones? Will the
weather hold? Will people come?
Will it be good? Anyone who has
orchestrated a significant event
knows all those thoughts and the
Brussels Farmers' Market Board
have been busy in preparation, and
now it's anticipation mode.
For the folks at the United Church,
the first market day is full of
anticipation as well. The little details
of our hospitality booth are
reviewed, the supplies are checked,
the volunteers ready and hope we're
ready to roll. So hopefully you'll
check our tent several times this
summer, stop in for a sit down, a
chat and a little refreshment, you'll
be glad you did.
My anticipation level is pretty
high as well as we're expecting to
welcome the moderator of the
United Church of Canada, Jordan
Cantwell, to Brussels. Mind you she
did have some other business in the
area, but when Rev. Gary Clark
issued the invitation, time was made
to see what's happening in our part
of the country. So that's pretty
exciting, the United Church Boss is
coming to Brussels — Wow!
One evening last week the state of
our mental health was discussed
with Rev. Gary Clark. That sentence
alone is scary! This gathering was a

The Brussels Army Cadet Corp is
busy practising on Tuesday
evenings for the year-end
inspection. They have been able to
be outside for practice and
hopefully the weather will alow
them to have their evening outside
for the inspection on May 31.
The Brussels Legion Branch was
closed over the holiday weekend so
everyone could enjoy the first
really nice weekend of the summer.

after our bodies when they act up,
but we treat our mental well-being as
almost an afterthought.
The Canadian Mental Health
Association has offices in Seaforth,
Goderich and Stratford, so help is
there. Major events, or routine life
circumstances can cause the mind to
go in strange directions. This is not
unusual. Be mindful of how you feel
and if after a few days of imbalance,
ask for help. We need to be honest
with our feelings, find folks you trust
to share your concerns. So starting
now, when they ask, how are you?
Don't answer you're fine, if you're
not fine. Tell them how you really
feel.
Mental health is serious, just as
our physical being needs attention,
so does mood, attitude and actions.
Be mindful of your life balance and
make mental health an equal priority
to physical and spiritual wellbeing.
