Wawanosh 4-H continues work at Wingham garden
Meeting four of the Wawanosh 4-
H Horticultural Club took place at 7
p.m. on May 10 at the Wingham
Community Garden. As members
arrived they were quick to start
working in the garden. Once all
members had arrived Maisy led roll
call which was "name a vegetable
you have grown, or want to grow,
and how it turned out". Answers
varied from corn to potatoes to
beans.
Members then split up into
working groups. Some took on the
challenge of levelling the mounds of
soil in the four larger beds while
some planted strawberries in one of
the narrower raised beds. Others put
up trellises for peas and then planted
three different varieties of peas.
After the planting was completed,
members headed to Leader Eileen's
house. Once there, the club read and
discussed the common bond
between various vegetables. Ideas
for a club name were put forth and
the club decided on "Garden Gang"
as its name. Abby R. is to create a
title page for the club with that
name. The leaders reminded
members to work on their individual
club projects as they will expect an
update how the projects are coming
along.
The club then read about when to
plant various vegetables and if they
were going to grow their own
seedlings when they should be
planted. Many vegetables are best
planted outdoors two weeks after the
last frost date. Next, Mary Ellen led
the club in an interactive activity on
how to properly plant your garden.
Now knowing how to plan a proper
garden, the members filled out "Tips
for a Better Garden".
The meeting was closed with the
motto and the club enjoyed a snack
of cantaloupe and juice provided by
Eileen.
Meeting three of the Wawanosh 4-
H Horticultural Club took place on
May 7 at the Wingham Community
Garden at 10 a.m. President Maisy
led the club in roll call which was
"What is something that you have
built or helped to build?"
After roll call members were given
a choice of the working groups that
