The Citizen, 2016-05-19, Page 15THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2016. PAGE 15. Trilliums, other signs of spring abound despite cold PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 The week has given us glimpses of warm weather to come and then it takes it away. Definitely a cold weekend was not enjoyed but we can hope that it will get warmer and it will be the end of the snow! Travelling along the way, you can see the beautiful trillium flowers blooming in the bushes. Now we can say it is spring I think! We said goodbye to Archie McDonald this week. He and his Prepping the pool The Brussels Lions Pool had to undergo some minor repairs to be ready for the swimming season this year. Shown working on the structure of the pool after removing its liner are Troy Rollins, left, and Al Aubin. (Denny Scott photo) MORTGAGES friend Rosie have returned to his home on Cape Breton Island. Allergies chase him away from southwestern Ontario but he is much better when in Cape Breton. He will be back again in August when he attends his nephew's wedding. Bye Arch! The only Friday the 13th of the year was last week. Motorcycle enthusiasts shone up the bikes and were away to Port Dover for the gathering of thousands. It was probably a little cool riding first thing in the morning, but the day did get better and by the looks of the folks on television, it was a beautiful day in Dover! The only locals I heard that went were Blaine and Debra McCutcheon. Congratulations to Shelley Jorritsma who has retired from the Brussels post office. Folks around Brussels will miss her smiling and friendly face behind the counter. Folks dropping in on Tuesday could enjoy a piece of retirement cake and to say goodbye to Shelley, her final day was Thursday. Happy retirement! Neil McDonald has returned to Vancouver after his two-week stay in Ontario. He worked a couple of days at the farm and then spent time getting his own projects at his home looked after. Our condolences to the family of the late Verna Weber, formerly of RR 2, Brussels. She will be missed by her siblings Nelson, Dorothy and Ken and many nieces and nephews. Verna was a resident in Palmerston and in her 90th year. A wonderful performance of Cinderella's Glass Slipper was presented by students of St. James School in Seaforth last week. Many of our local students were part of the three-day production. Walton/ Brussels area students participating in the cast of performers for the musical included Bennett Smith, Maddy McNichol, Marissa VanderPloeg, Shawna Terpstra, Katrina Gubelmann and Lily Grobbink. Behind the scene crew included help from Cole and Cody Terpstra. There were 50 students from the Grade 6, 7 and 8 classes involved and it was a great test of working co-operatively in the production. Good job all! Celebrating birthdays this past week include Gavin Bowers, Jim Cook, Barb Fritz, Tracey Lee, Shane Ryan, Andrea Shortreed, Jeff Grobbink, Lynn Love, Jennifer McClure Van Driel, Cathy Melady, Grace Linton, Joyce Williamson, Leanne Armstrong, Luann Bennett, Phil Blake, Dwayne Pryce, Ron Strome, Rachel Wilts and Wendy Glauser. Happy birthday to all. FROM WALTON ueen's faith apparent Continued from page 12 Brits have another celebration honouring her June 10-12. In commemoration of the event, a book The Servant Queen and the King She Serves has been published which relates snippets of our monarch's faith in her own words. She wrote in the foreword, "I have been — and remain — very grateful to you for your prayers and to God for his steadfast love. I have indeed seen his faithfulness." Her 2002 Christmas broadcast reflects the Queen's reverence for God and eagerness to pursue fairness. "I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning. I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God... I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel." ADVERTISE ACROSS ONTARIO OR ACROSS THE COUNTRY!
