Sports Madill students qualify for WOSSAA competition Pulling ahead Brittany Walden, shown above competing in the Senior Girls triple jump at a recent track and field event in Goderich, is a member of the F.E. She earned her spot at the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) with a second -place finish in the high jump competition at the Huron -Perth championships in Goderich last week. (Photo submitted) Although Goderich track and field meets in spring are notorious for poor weather, excellent weather conditions prevailed this year for the Huron Perth championships. Under sunny skies and temperatures in the teens, athletes from 11 Huron Perth schools were able to perform well. The F.E. Madill Secondary School team was smaller this season with a total of 33 athletes. However, those athletes were able to dig deep and persevere and achieve some outstanding results. They won two team titles, achieved two individual championships and amassed enough points to compete for the overall title. This year Northwestern Secondary School edged out Madill, winning the championship for the first time in the history of their school. Madill was a close second. With only 33 athletes, everyone was called on to perform well and do all their events. It was an all round team effort with the athletes achieving 36 personal bests and one relay team best. In the Midget Girls division, Jordyn Stuzman sprinted down the stretch to earn second in sprint hurdles and third in distance hurdles. At the high jump pit, Rachel Van Stuyvenburg soared over the bar at 1.4 metres to win the event. Ally Marston was able to qualify in both the 400 -metre race (third) and triple jump (fourth). On the track, Dana Dolmage proved her abilities in distance running qualifying for the Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) in the 800 - metre, 1,500 -metre and 3,000 -metre races. Christina Schraa had excellent results in the throws, throwing the shot, discus and javelin farther than she ever had before. The Junior Girls team was well balanced and strong enabling them to win the team championship with points from sprints, throws, jumps and distance running. Despite a severe ankle injury, Jessica Johnston rose to the challenge winning the sprint hurdles and high jump and coming second in distance hurdles. Teammates Taylor Montgomery and Jasmine Vader continued to be a successful throwing duo, winning top spots in shot put, discus and javelin. Yasmin Eddijli and Lexi Smith earned lots of points on the track in the 100 -metre and 200 -metre races and the long jump and triple jump events. Emma Metcalfe and Nicole Ward persevered on the track earning top rankings in 400 -metre, 800 -metre, 1,500 -metre and 3,000 -metre. and steeplechase. The 4x100 relay team of Yasmin Eddijli, Nicole Ward, Emma Metcalfe, and Lexi Smith sprinted the baton around the track in the 4x 100 -metre relay to win first place. In the Senior Girls division, Karissa Schiestel and Sydney Wightman both hurled the discus over 30 metres to win first and second places. Karissa also won javelin (28.29 metres) and was fourth in shot put. In the long jump, Sonja Petersen leaped 4.39 metres to win the event. Emily Meier worked hard on the track qualifying in all three distance runs: 800 -metre, 1,500 -metre, and 3,000 -metre. Brittany Walden won second in high jump and fourth in triple jump. In the Midget and Junior boys division, Austin Eadie led the way winning long jump (5.19 metres) and leaping 10.69 metres to earn second place in triple jump. Nathan Hammer, a recent addition to the team, qualified in all three of his events (400 -metre and 800 -metre races and the triple jump). Craig Murray crushed his best performance in the 1,500 -metre with his clocking of 5:29.89. Two Midget boys joined two Junior boys to form a 4x100 -metre relay team in the Junior division. Matt Darrell, Nathan Hammer, Austin Eadie and Mitch Deans sprinted with the baton around the track with a winning time of 49.96 seconds. Mitch Deans won the individual Huron Perth junior title with three wins: the 200 -metre race (24.42 seconds), long jump (5.66 metres), and triple jump (11.90 metres). Teammate Matt Darrell also had strong performances in the 400 - metre race (54.69 seconds earning second place), triple jump (11.24 metres earning second place) and long jump (5.41 metres earning third place). Sprinter Shaun Darling qualified in both 200 -metre and 400 - metre races helping his team of three junior athletes win second place in overall Junior Boys points. The Madill Senior Boys division had balance and ability on its side as Justin McKague led the way winning the senior boys individual championship with wins in the high jump, triple jump and long jump. Teammate Lyndon Smith was runner-up to McKague winning the sprint hurdles (15.98 seconds), the 100 -metre (11.58 seconds) and leaping 11.45 metres in triple jump to win second place. Ayden Tiffin contributed points in high jump and triple jump. Ben Newell, nursing a knee problem, managed to place well in all three of his events despite the injury. He won discus with a standing throw of 35.58 metres, earned third in javelin with a short Pulling ahead The Blyth U13 Girls took on their rivals from Wingham in one of the first soccer matches of the year on Sparling Fields south of Blyth. The home field advantage proved to be more than Wingham could take as Blyth won the match 7-1 (Vicky Bremner) approach, and jumped off his "wrong leg' in high jump to earn a fourth -place finish at 1.60 metres. Mitch Ward also contributed significant points in all three throws with top placings in shot, discus and javelin. Billy Darrell helped Madill dominate the jumping pits with his second in long jump (5.58 metres) and third in triple jump (11.24 metres) in addition to the above results. Distance runners Michael Schraa and Brandon Murray also contributed points on the track with Schraa running the steeplechase to win third and Murray earning a significant personal best in 3,000 - metre with 10:47.71. The Senior Boys were clear winners of their division title over teams from larger schools. The top six athletes in each event qualify to compete at WOSSAA May 19-20 at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London. Madill has 31 athletes who qualified to make the trip to and compete in London.
