The Citizen, 2016-05-19, Page 7Second 140th meeting May 31 Continued from page 1 Goodall seconded that, stating there will be some small celebrations for Canada's 150th birthday, which will be handled by the BIA and the town's annual fireworks on July 1. BIA Chair Rick Elliott said that Blyth Arts and Cultural Initiative 14/19 Inc. is planning on having the second iteration of its wildly successful Fare on Four where the group fed 1,419 people on Blyth's main street two years ago. "That was in mid- to late -August," Elliott said. "I just got notice that it was planned, so a date might not be set but we should be aware of that." He also said that he was aware that the Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company was planning some celebrations for the event as well. Elliott went on to say that the meeting was about building a framework for what could happen and that details could be hammered out later. "As a group, we have to decide what we would like to do," he said, giving suggestions like parades and dancing. Cat O'Donnell, a member of the BIA and co-owner of Wonky Frog Studios, suggested a fireworks evening and some kind of celebration with a birthday cake while others stated a date should be considered first. Some conversation was had about pairing the celebration of Blyth's 140th founding anniversary with Blyth Streetfest as well as Canada's 150th birthday which led Stewart to ask if the celebration was going to be limited to a single event. "Are we going to try and do everything one weekend or are we going to spread it out over a number of different celebrations?" he asked. Elliott said it might be best to determine which celebrations are already happening and try to capture the momentum involved there, suggesting that the Lions Club's annual seed sowers barbecue could be part of the celebration. After some more discussion, in which Streetfest was suggested as a good pairing for the event, Elliott suggested that he talk to Huron County Cultural Development Officer Rick Sickinger who keeps track of all the events held in the county. Elliott went on to say that Sickinger's calendar, which breaks down which weekends which events are happening, would help him come back to the group with a firm suggestion for when the celebration(s) could take place without competing with events in Wingham, Brussels, Londesborough or Clinton to make sure there weren't multiple draws on attendance. After that, the group discussed ideas about how to get visitors and former residents back to Blyth to celebrate the occasion including `passports' that would encourage people to visit downtown shops and some of the other events throughout the year and calendars that would highlight both the events planned for Blyth's 140th as well as those in the surrounding community. The group decided to meet on May 31 to further develop plans for the celebration. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2016. PAGE 7.
