The Blyth Festival, Brussels
musician Lyndon John X and The
Citizen's Blyth -area publisher Keith
Roulston were among several people
honoured at the Huron Arts and
Heritage Network Huron Cultural
Awards over the weekend.
The event, now in its seventh year,
recognized individuals and groups
who have made exceptional
advancements in culture in the
community. It was held on Friday in
Holmesville.
The winners included the Blyth
Festival in the Cultural
Event/Organization field, Lyndon
John X of Brussels in the individual
artist field, The Citizen Publisher
Keith Roulston in the community
contribution field, the Bayfield
Historical Society and Archives in
Bayfield for Heritage and Individual
or Organization, FauxPop Media of
Goderich took home the innovation
award and Gerry Smith of Exeter
won the Warden's award.
Blyth Festival General Manager
Deb Sholdice said the Cultural
Event/Organization award showed
that the work of the Festival and its
artists is recognized at home as well
as abroad.
"It was a great honour and a
surprise for everyone," she said.
"Being nominated was an honour
and being a finalist was an extreme
honour but winning is really an
affirmation of the work we are doing
here."
Sholdice said that sometimes
ticket sales tell the Festival they are
doing a good job, however, given the
nature of the Festival and how many
tourists it attracts, having the body
of work of the Blyth Festival
recognized by a local group is
gratifying.
The fact that the Festival's
mandate and its body of work
focuses on local stories adds value to
the win as well, Sholdice said,
because it means the people of
Huron County really appreciate the
stories being told and how Huron
County is carried far and wide by the
works produced there.
Lyndon John X, a Juno -nominated
reggae artist, was recognized for his
talent and contributions to culture
throughout the community. He said

that he was thankful for the award
and really enjoyed the evening.
"The entire event was a great
time," he said in an interview with
The Citizen. "I did a two -song
performance with a bass guitarist,
Frank Dias."
He said the award was a welcome
surprise for him and winning was
unexpected, adding that he thinks
it's great that the Huron Arts and
Heritage Network recognizes local
efforts like these.
"It felt good to be recognized,
especially in Huron County," he
said. "To have a group acknowledge
the arts like that is great. Many
people might think that around here
all we do is agriculture, but it's great
to have the arts, and especially arts
like reggae music, noticed"
John X said he thinks the awards
give a broader perspective of what
Huron County has to offer and they
do that not only through recognizing
local artistic and cultural endeavours
but by shining a spotlight on local
producers as well.
"Part of the awards that they gave
out was giving out parts of Huron
County," he said. "They gave out
maple syrup, coffee and other
products to the winners, which are
different aspects of Huron County

that people might miss. I thought
that was really cool. You can drive
right past a lot of places looking for
bigger, brand name products but we
have really good home-grown stuff
right here. I thought it was great to
have and to recognize what was
going on in Huron County."
John X's two -song set was part of
the entertainment for the evening,
however, recently, he participated in
JUNOFest that recognized Juno -
nominated artists where he
performed a 45 -minute set.
"It was really good," he said.
