Lending a helping hand
The Londesborough Lions held their annual fish fry over the weekend and planned for 550
hungry mouths to feed. The Brussels Legion fish fry crew was on hand to help out. Shown are,

The Brussels Horticultural Society
was out in full force last week as it
attacked the designated flowerbeds
in the village. Garbage and weeds
didn't have a chance with these
people, who meant business as they
chatted about flowers and weeds
while they worked. Good job!
Huron Perth Presbytery of the
United Church of Canada welcomed
an old friend last week in Brucefield.
Randy Banks returned from
Waterloo Presbytery to minister to
the combined churches of the former
congregations of Varna Goshen
Kippen and Brucefield, now named
Brucefield Community United
Church. Rev. Gary Clark in his role
as chairperson presided.
In 2018, finally Canadian currency
will have a woman on its surface.
After all this time, the choices are
pretty great — just who should have
this honour. From an editorial in the
Toronto Star about this long overdue
issue. Pauline Johnston was their
choice — mine too! Her connection

poetry celebrating her aboriginal

speaking tours, she was immensely

That is a quote from the Star and I
recall seeing her image on the stage
and a writeup of the event — my
Jenkins grandparents would have
probably attended. Her Mohawk and
English heritage made her very
interesting to me as a student and
now it is very timely to make her
Native heritage an issue and put her
image on our money.
As we saw and heard about the
monster fire in Alberta, our hearts
skipped a beat and our tears were
ready. Many of us know someone
who lives there, has or does work
there or has visited. That long road,
seemingly to nowhere, is now
famous as the escape route as the

landscape that reminds me of the

What would you grab in a similar
situation with only a few minutes to
decide? If we see life as a journey,
what would go with you on very
short notice like theirs? This is a long
haul situation. Needs will be
determined as days and moths pass,
we'll soon see where we can help.
Keep the kind thoughts and prayers
going as reality for them sets in.
The 2017 International Plowing

missed that fact the tent on the

you that the official sign is revealed.
Enjoy the busyness of May.

Last supper Friday
By Jo -Ann McDonald
We hope all the mothers in the
area had a wonderful Mother's Day
and had time to spend with their
family.
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch had the usual activities
including the Cadet meeting and
Pipe Band practice. We hope there
was some interest in joining the Pipe
Band. Don Martin is the contact for
information.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was enjoyed by about 25
people. This week will be the last
supper and it will feature chicken,
pork and beef. The cooks will be
taking the summer off and hopefully
will return in the fall after
Thanksgiving.
The fish fry crew cooked for the
biggest fry of the year in
Londesborough on Saturday. The
Londesborough Lions prepare for
550 people to enjoy a delicious fish
fry dinner. It was a good day and
everything went very well for all.
Comrades working for the Branch
were Jim Brown, Sandra Josling,
Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith, Jamie
Mitchell, Deb Ross, Ron and Daisy
Schmidt, Rick, Jo -Ann and Neil
McDonald and Judy Lee. A good
job by all.

Former Brussels
school to be sold
After a closed -to -the -public
session at its May 3 meeting, Huron
East Council has declared the
Brussels Business and Cultural
Centre surplus.
The request for proposal (RFP)
process has now begun, with the
municipality proceeding to sell the
former Brussels Public School.
Council could offer no further
details on the decision to sell the
building.
Huron East Council first
expressed an interest in buying the
former school in January, 2012.
When the municipality was the
successful bidder and became owner
of the school, it was renamed the
Brussels Business and Cultural
Centre and was used as a "small
business incubator" offering
affordable office space to local
businesses trying to get off the
ground.
In recent years, however, it has
become home to the Old Colony
Mennonite School, housing
numerous classrooms full of
Mennonite students and teachers, as
profiled in The Citizen last year.
Over the years, tennants have
included Elections Canada, the
Brussels Community Bible Chapel
and various local businesses.
