Society cleans flower beds A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 The Brussels Horticultural Society was out in full force last week as it attacked the designated flowerbeds in the village. Garbage and weeds didn't have a chance with these people, who meant business as they chatted about flowers and weeds while they worked. Good job! Huron Perth Presbytery of the United Church of Canada welcomed an old friend last week in Brucefield. Randy Banks returned from Waterloo Presbytery to minister to the combined churches of the former congregations of Varna Goshen Kippen and Brucefield, now named Brucefield Community United Church. Rev. Gary Clark in his role as chairperson presided. In 2018, finally Canadian currency will have a woman on its surface. After all this time, the choices are pretty great — just who should have this honour. From an editorial in the Toronto Star about this long overdue issue. That is a quote from the Star and I recall seeing her image on the stage and a writeup of the event — my Jenkins grandparents would have probably attended. Her Mohawk and English heritage made her very interesting to me as a student and now it is very timely to make her Native heritage an issue and put her image on our money. As we saw and heard about the monster fire in Alberta, our hearts skipped a beat and our tears were ready. Many of us know someone who lives there, has or does work there or has visited. That long road, seemingly to nowhere, is now famous as the escape route as the beast continues to cut down trees and At the Branch buildings with abandon, leaving a landscape that reminds me of the picture of England after the blitz. What would you grab in a similar situation with only a few minutes to decide? If we see life as a journey, what would go with you on very short notice like theirs? This is a long haul situation. Bye now, Betty G.W. Last supper Friday By Jo -Ann McDonald We hope all the mothers in the area had a wonderful Mother's Day and had time to spend with their family. The week at the Brussels Legion Branch had the usual activities including the Cadet meeting and Pipe Band practice. We hope there was some interest in joining the Pipe Band. Don Martin is the contact for information. The Friday night supper of roast beef was enjoyed by about 25 people. This week will be the last supper and it will feature chicken, pork and beef. The cooks will be taking the summer off and hopefully will return in the fall after Thanksgiving. The fish fry crew cooked for the biggest fry of the year in Londesborough on Saturday. The Londesborough Lions prepare for 550 people to enjoy a delicious fish fry dinner. It was a good day and everything went very well for all. App Store Former Brussels school to be sold After a closed -to -the -public session at its May 3 meeting, Huron East Council has declared the Brussels Business and Cultural Centre surplus. The request for proposal (RFP) process has now begun, with the municipality proceeding to sell the former Brussels Public School. Council could offer no further details on the decision to sell the building. Huron East Council first expressed an interest in buying the former school in January, 2012. When the municipality was the successful bidder and became owner of the school, it was renamed the Brussels Business and Cultural Centre and was used as a "small business incubator" offering affordable office space to local businesses trying to get off the ground. In recent years, however, it has become home to the Old Colony Mennonite School, housing numerous classrooms full of Mennonite students and teachers, as profiled in The Citizen last year. Over the years, tennants have included Elections Canada, the Brussels Community Bible Chapel and various local businesses. NEWS FROM BRUSSELS Municipality of Huron East Pursuant to the provisions of By -Law 61-2013, the Municipality of Huron East has declared Lot L, Part Lots H, M & N, Plan 192 (650 Alexander Street, Brussels) surplus. The Municipality has issued an RFP for the sale of this parcel of land being approximately 8.56 acres. A copy of the RFP is available at the Huron East Municipal Office or on the Huron East website (www.huroneast.com).
