Huron County Museum to launch WWI short films On Saturday, May 7 the Huron County Museum will launch two new short films about World War I with an afternoon event at the Museum. Visit the Museum at 110 North St. at 2 p.m. for a first chance to view the films and explore the History Hall, which has been decorated in 1916 fashion. In addition to previewing the films, the event will also debut two new iPad apps in the Military Gallery that contain photographs, documents, and letters from the home front and front lines. With funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage, the successful completion of the World War I film project allows the Huron County Museum to share a fascinating era of Huron County history with the world. During WWI, many community groups, including Women's Institutes, schools, and churches, made sure they "did their bit" by knitting socks, raising money for the Red Cross, and sending care packages to local soldiers overseas. Over 30 local women enlisted as nursing sisters with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, serving in Casualty Clearing Stations and hospitals in the Mediterranean, England, France, and Canada. Both documentaries feature photographs, letters, and newspapers articles from the Huron County Archives collection. The museum is making Huron County's WWI history more accessible to local residents, veterans' families and everyone else around the world. For more information about this event or the collection, please call Jenna Leifso at the Huron County Museum, 519-524-2686 ext. 201.
