Mark Royall Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church, Auburn Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Do you have those seasons when there is more to do than what you feel you have to give? I bet you have. A week ago I found myself there too. I was looking ahead at a very full week. I had to be away in the city for two full days of meetings. I also had to find time to prepare five hours of teaching I would be doing for a seminar at our church. I was scheduled to prepare and lead the worship music for the following Sunday. I knew I had this article to write, I had visiting appointments, and other meetings locally I needed to participate in. Then, of course, I needed to find the many hours to prepare a sermon for Sunday morning. As I looked ahead, I knew this would be another week without being able to take a day off. To make matters more challenging 1 sprained my ankle making mobility a little more difficult. To get done what I needed to get done, I knew I would have to work every day from morning to night and I was tempted to feel overwhelmed and I know you have been there too. As I was starting to feel overwhelmed I received a call from someone asking if I could visit two different people in our church. They said they were not complaining, and they weren't, but I knew they thought I should be visiting more. Visiting people is one of the least taxing things a pastor can do. It usually involves coffee, treats and getting to know people better, which I enjoy. However, it is very time consuming and in a church of our size with just one pastor, I am usually only able to do crisis visitation when a pressing and urgent need comes up. t t t t t t t t t t t t t t Liui 'Wtiter Cruitiatt Twp Sat. The Citizen Proudly Community -Owned Since 1985 r I knew this person had no idea what my schedule looked like but I still couldn't help but feel the stress of trying to please and meet the expectations of others. Do you ever feel this burden in your life? And what can accentuate this burden further is when you put it all out there, doing your best, putting in extra time, and people don't seem to recognize your effort. It hurts when you receive little or no thanks for all you do. Even worse, you can be criticized by people who just don't know but feel as if they are in a place where they do and they pass judgement on you which is unfair and inaccurate. When I find myself in this place there are two things I do which I would like to pass along to you. One, I make sure I am not guilty of holding my sincere gratitude and appreciation for what others are doing. I speak to them privately and publicly acknowledging how what they do is making a difference in my life, in the life of the church or in our community. I know how easily it is to fall into the deep trap of taking what other people do for granted. Secondly, and this is crucial, I practise the wise counsel of Colossians 3: 23-24. Here the Bible tells us, "Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ." I know if I work expecting to receive praise from people I am setting myself up for great ANGLICAN PARISH OF NEW BEGINNINGS BLYTH Trinity (J4 9:15 am Church Office 519-357-4883 BRUSSELS St. John's 11:15 am Church Office 519-887-6862 Everyone Welcome!
