Carbon monoxide detectors donated by bureau
A big donation
The Insurance Bureau of Canada made a donation of 150 carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to
the Huron -Perth Hoarding Coalition last month to help make residences in the counties safe.
The coalition will be working with the Children's Aid Society to make sure the alarms are
distributed where they need to go. Shown are, from left: Fire Prevention Officer for Morris-

they do not have to leave any
residents at risk of CO poisoning.
"We are very appreciative of the
opportunity to assist fire

CH support Dutch
Canadian celebration
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Central Huron Council has
committed $700 to the Dutch
Canadians Remember as One
celebration scheduled for Goderich
in 2017.
Sid Bruinsma and Jim Rutledge
spoke to council at its meeting last
month and detailed their multi-
faceted request and provided more
information about the celebration.
The men hoped that council would
first sign a letter of support for the
celebration that could be posted on
the event's website. Letters of
support, they said, will go a long
way to assist in one of their loftiest
goals for the celebration: bringing
Her Royal Highness Princess
Margriet of the Netherlands to be
their guest of honour.
Rutledge, who is the author of The
Men of Huron: A Book of Honour
and Remembrance, says that after
working on his first book to honour
Huron's soldiers in World War II, he
has since directed his attention to
local soldiers who fought in World
War L
"My passion for the last 10 years
has been to honour our veterans," he
told councillors after officially
presenting council with a signed
copy of his book.
Bruinsma detailed the celebration,
which is set to take place in
Goderich at Liberation Park.
"We have invited Her Royal
Highness Princess Margriet of the
Netherlands to be our guest. We
would like her to unveil a plaque
commemorating the surrender of the
German troops in the Netherlands to
end the Second World War in the
Netherlands," the group's letter
reads, "and also to unveil a new sign,
`Liberation Memorial Park' at
the park on Victoria Street in
Goderich."
Bruinsma and Rutledge explained
that inviting someone like the
princess is not a simple process and
needs to be approved through the
Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Stephane Dion.
The men said that the requested
donation amount of $700 represents
one dollar for every person from
Huron County who laid down his/her
life for the cause of World War I,
which is just over 700 people.
Councillor Marg Anderson made a
point to mention the municipality's
thriving Communities in Bloom
organization, which was recently
granted a tulip garden to honour the
Dutch -Canadian relationship.
Perhaps, she suggested, those behind
this celebration could enlist the
services of those enthusiastic
gardeners.
Council approved the pair's
request for a grant of $700 that will
go towards promoting the event and
securing equipment necessary to
hold the event.

and its ambitious plan for 2017, visit

"It is these kinds of partnerships
that offer a means of educating and
achieving compliance. In knowing
these units will all be protecting
children, who are the most
susceptible to carbon monoxide
poisoning, makes it all the more
rewarding," he said.
Perth East and West Perth Fire
Chief Bill Hunter added, "In these
kinds of situations, the last thing a
family should need to worry about is
whether or not they have a working
CO alarm. A program like this not
only serves a need, it also gives
families one less worry during a
difficult period in their lives."
"In Ontario you must have carbon
monoxide alarms installed adjacent
to each sleeping area if you have any
fuel fired appliance, attached garage
or fireplace," said Todd McKone,
Fire Prevention Officer for the Perth
East and West Perth Fire
Departments.
North Huron Fire Chief David
Sparling described the local impact
of CO. "We are responding to calls
with dangerous levels of Carbon
Monoxide every three months.
Without CO alarms these calls could
have had tragic consequences."
The units being provided are
equipped with a light -emitting diode
(LED) display that shows
continuous levels of carbon
monoxide within the home and it
also tracks the peak levels. Such
units provide less opportunity for
false alarms, which reduces call
volume for local fire departments.
With both Huron Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson and Randy Pettapiece
MPP for Perth Wellington in
attendance, the scale of this initiative
was very evident. Both MPPs agreed
that the donation to the CO alarm
program will allow case workers
from the Children's Aid Society to
assist families across many
municipal borders.
