(File photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Discover the Gardens of Huron -Perth project is looking to help people plan horticulturally -focused day trips in and around Huron and Perth Counties. The project, which results in a new guide being released every year with a list of gardens that can be visited for unique horticultural experiences, represents the culmination of a group effort according to organizer Rhea Hamilton -Seeger, that looks to showcase gardening throughout both counties. The tour features 25 gardens throughout the area including some new and many familiar sites for those who follow the project. Hamilton -Seeger said there were several that deserved a spotlight to be shone upon them. "Rainstone Farm [number four in the pamphlet] is a very interesting place to visit," she said. "It's run by Ron and Elfi Enns and Ron likes novelty trees while Elfi is an artist, so it's a great place to visit." The farm, which is located on Westfield Road near Auburn, features a vegetable garden, which is the focus of many gardens this year. Hamilton -Seeger explained that many people are interested in finding out what it takes to have a vegetable garden, so the organizers of the tour have started identifying those locations with vegetables with a small radish icon next to their descriptions. Hideaway Haven, Jane Smyth's entry into the tour, is located in Blyth and offers some unique plants to take in according to Hamilton - Seeger. The site, according to the pamphlet, offers a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees as well as drought -tolerant perennials. The site also features some great visual vistas including a bridge over a dry riverbed and a rustic cabin. Hamilton -Seeger said Smyth's location has great examples of carolinian trees that have been creeping north including sycamore trees as well as eastern redbud shrubs which feature beautiful hot pink flowers. Hideaway Haven is located at number eight on the pamphlet and is one of the sites marked by a bus symbol, meaning there is room for groups to visit. Smokey Hollow Farm, run by Joan Brady, who many people know for her work with local farmers' markets, offers a cut -your -own flower operation which Hamilton - Seeger said is a very unique option. "It's a very interesting choice for someone to go with," she said. "It's definitely a place worth visiting" The farm (number 19 on the pamphlet) is located near Dashwood. Also in the Dashwood area is Don and Anne Russell's garden called Our Peace of Paradise. The site is a large rural garden with four -season interest according the pamphlet. It can be located at number 20 in the pamphlet. Hamilton -Seeger says the site is Continued on page 15 • Renovations • New Homes • Sales & Installation of Windows & Doors Celebrating 80 Years In Business!
