Crime
spree
ends in
Saltford
A 25 -year-old male from Central
Huron remains in custody after he
attended court on April 27. Huron
County Ontario Provincial Police
(OPP) have laid 13 charges against
the accused in connection to a series
of events that unfolded last week.
Just before 3 p.m. on April 26
Huron County Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) officers responded to a
complaint of a possible impaired
driver on Saltford Road. Police
received information that a male
driver had driven to a residence in
Saltford and parked a vehicle on the
front lawn of the caller's property.
The driver tried to leave the property
in the vehicle however the engine
had sustained significant damage
and the vehicle was immobile. The
driver abandoned the vehicle and
fled on foot heading toward the
Maitland River carrying a case of
beer.
Officers were able to locate the
male driver walking toward the
river. Upon speaking with the male
police observed several signs that
the male was intoxicated. Upon
confirming the identity of the driver
he was placed under arrest for
impaired driving. He later refused to
provide a breath sample to the
Intoxilizer Technician.
Further police investigation
revealed the driver started his crime
spree that morning in Clinton. The
accused first stole an unlocked 2005
Ford F-150 pickup truck from a
Huron Street business. He later
drove to a property located on
Bluewater Veterans' Highway where
he forced entry into the residence
and stole a case of beer. He then
abandoned the pickup truck and
stole a Plymouth sedan from the
scene. The episode continued when
the driver was observed spinning his
tires on several front lawns located
on Westmount Line. After tearing up
the lawns the driver took off with the
damaged vehicle where it came to a
stop at the Saltford Road property.
The Central Huron man faces the
following charges:
• Two counts of Theft of a Motor
Vehicle Over $5,000
• Break, Enter Dwelling House —
Commit Theft
• Impaired Driving
• Refuse to Provide Breath
Sample
• Driving While Disqualified
• Driving While Under
Suspension
• Four counts of Mischief Under
$5,000
• Two counts of Fail to Comply
with Probation Order.
The accused was held in custody
prior to an April 29 video court
appearance at the Ontario Court of
Justice in Goderich.
