At the Branch
Hurrah, hurrah for the first of
May - you finish with your words,
there are many versions but they all
celebrate warm weather. At this
house it also means tax season is
over, well for most folks, and the
numbers and papers and mutterings
have nearly stopped. Welcome May.
If you haven't tried pickle ball yet,
it's not too late. First time is free to
see how much you like it, then you
need $3 to cover the fun and exercise
that will be yours as you swish your
paddle about. In the auditorium or
on the sports pad as the weather
warms, with several times available,
it's a game that can be played on
several levels. If you haven't given it
a try you really should check it out.
I'm writing this on Saturday as
we're heading to Hallville for our
last visit. Brother Jim and Beth have
lived on their neat wee spot on earth
since the 1980s. They started out

The Brussels Lions Club hosted another breakfast at the Brussels Legion to help community
betterment. Whether diners were looking for pancakes, sausages or just a cup of joe, the
cooking crew, above, were happy to oblige. (Denny scoff photo)

The general meeting of Brussels
Legion Branch was held on Tuesday
evening and elections for the
executive were held. There was a
good crowd in attendance, including
special guest Deputy Zone
Commander Keith Vandenhoek. The
regular business of the Branch was
conducted before the elections,
conducted by Keith. The executive
for 2016/2017 are: president, Jo-
Ann McDonald; first vice-president,
Deb Cann; second vice-president,
Andy Overholt; treasurer, Alicia
McDonald; secretary, Sandra
Josling; sergeant -at -arms, Lisa
Glanville; executive members,
Mabel Glanville, Eric Ross, Judy
Lee, Jamie Mitchell, Deb Ross and
Lisa Glanville. The slate of officers
will be installed at the next general
meeting in May.
I missed a very important person
involved with the trivia night last
week. Catrina Josling was a very
important part of the evening
because she was in charge of the
power point display, something the
rest of us knew nothing about!
Thanks Catrina.
The Friday night supper of
chicken breast was enjoyed by a
small crowd of 15 people. This week
will be roast beef. There are only
two weeks left before the summer

break, so come out and enjoy.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had a good crowd of 11 tables of
players. Results went astray but will
do better next time. Helping look
after the day were Wayne Smith and
Jean Davidson.
The Branch had the pleasure of a
visiting Branch bus trip. There were
43 members from the Clinton
Legion Branch and they were on a
branch bus hop. They started at
Clinton and went to Seaforth Branch
and then on to Mitchell Branch.
Next was Brussels and after an hour
stay, it was on to Blyth Branch and
then home. We had a great time
making new friends with the visiting
Branch folks.
The Brussels Lions held the third
Sunday morning breakfast of the
spring. They did a great job as usual
and fed about 250 people. Monies
raised go to various community
betterment projects the Lions will
support. A great job by the Lions!
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of just over 60 enjoy the
music of the Tri Country Band. They
always put up wonderful dancing
music and we are happy to have
them in our choice of bands.

married life in Airdrie, Alberta,
(hello Jean Bewley) and with the
sudden death of Beth's mom that
year, they came back to the Ottawa
area to help Beth's dad. Life took
hold, three kids were born and raised
along with chickens and turkeys and
other necessary things on 17 acres. A
three-storey barn was one of the neat
features as well as a creek and good
bush.
So it's now time for them to return
to Alberta, Rimby this time as the
boys both have settled there in
service to the oil patch. The sale is
complete and before they head west,
we wanted one last visit as many
happy holiday memories were
shared. So another reason to go
west - one son, two brothers, two
nephews and two friends, the visits
are getting longer as I type this.
Hopefully a good breakfast was
had by many on Sunday with the
Lions Club. We are an eating
community, a very good way to
socialize and get to know each other.
Smiles are on faces of many young
folks, who will soon graduate, as
they tell you their plans for the
future. Acceptances from Western
and Brock and Ridgetown were all
revealed with pride and relief as their
future unfolds. Oh what an exciting
time to watch hard work and talent
come together and be recognized.
For the older set, these are the kids
we judge the future on, and aren't we
lucky to know them.
