Art Gallery's Student Show opens Thursday
Young talent
The Student Show, which is held annually at the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery, is one of the most important shows in
the gallery's season, as it encourages and features art from
students all over Huron County and beyond. This year, it
has been nominated for a Huron Cultural Award. It opens

The Student Show 2016 will be
part of the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery's 41st season of exhibitions.
Dozens of works by Huron and Perth
County high school art students will
fill the Bainton Gallery for this
show, which begins with the opening
reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, April
28 and runs until May 9.
This annual show is an exciting
venue for the celebration of student

creativity and will feature the best
works of art students in Grades 9-12.
The Avon Maitland District School
Board includes schools from
Wingham, Clinton, Goderich,
Exeter, Mitchell, St. Marys,
Stratford and Listowel. The Huron
Perth Catholic School Board is
represented by students from
Clinton and Stratford. Many
different artistic techniques will be
featured including mixed media,
sculpture, photography, drawing,
painting, printmaking and digital
illustration.
This year, the Student Show has
been once again recognized and
nominated for Huron County's
Arts and Heritage Network's
Cultural Event of 2015.
The public can expect to see
exciting art, full of youthful energy
and off-the-wall ideas. The Student
Show 2016 is presented by the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery and sponsored
by Goderich Print Shop. It is curated
by Lauren Marshall and officially
opens with a celebratory reception in
the Bainton Gallery (Next to the
Blyth Festival box office) on
Thursday, April 28 at 6 p.m. Five
Awards of Excellence will be
presented to outstanding students.
All teachers, students, parents and
members of the public are invited to
the reception to join in the festivities
and help us open the exhibition.
Refreshments will be served.
The show will be open during the
Blyth Festival box office hours and
continues on display until May 19.
John X, Festival up for
Huron Cultural Awards
A number of local arts
contributors, both organizations and
individuals, are at the centre of the
Huron County arts scene after an
announcement last week.
Late last week, the Huron Arts and
Heritage Network announced the
nominees for its 2016 Huron County
Cultural Awards - a list that included
a number of local faces.
Both the Blyth Festival and the
Blyth Festival Art Gallery Student
Show are among the three finalists in
the Best Cultural
Event/Organization category, joined
by Goderich's Huron Harp School.
Lyndon John X, the multiple Juno -
nominated reggae musician from
Brussels, is nominated in the
Individual Artist category. He is
joined by Port Albert artist Michele
Miller, whose work has been shown
at the Blyth Festival Art Gallery, and
Gerry Smith of Exeter.
Citizen Publisher and Co -Founder
of the Blyth Festival Keith Roulston
is nominated in the Community
Contribution category.
Roulston is joined in the category
by the Goderich Makers Market and
the Goderich Inuksuit Installation.

Goderich's FauxPop Media and
Jenni Boles and the Exeter Library
are nominated for this year's
Innovation Award, while Peter and
Janis Bisback of Hensall, Phil
Gemeinhardt of Bayfield and the
Bayfield Historical Society and
Archives have been nominated in the
Heritage Individual or Organization
category.
The seventh annual Cultural
Awards Gala will take place on May
6 at the White Carnation in
Holmesville.
In addition to handing out a
number of awards, the evening will
also feature entertainment by a
variety of Huron County artists
including Lyndon John X, the Huron
Harp School, singer/songwriter
Charlie Weber, champion fiddler
Gerry Smith and Blyth Festival
Artistic Director Gil Garratt
performing a scene from the
Festival's upcoming production of
The Last Donnelly Standing. The
evening will also include a silent
auction to support the Huron Arts
and Heritage Network.
The event starts at 7:30 p.m.
