April ACWW church service held in Palmerston
By Margaret E. McMahon
Howick and Carry On Women's
Institute branches hosted the
Associated Country Women of the
World (ACWW) church service at
the Palmerston United Church on
Sunday, April 24.
Rev. Pam Tolmay based the
children's story on the making of
stone soup. She dressed as a poor
older lady travelling from village to
village (in Biblical times) with her
stone which she used to make her
stone soup. Her idea was to convince
the people in the villages to share
what they had with her to make a
large pot of soup, with the lesson
being it's what you bring to the pot"
but sharing no one need go hungry.
Guest speakers were Linda Woods
and Laurel Kenney co-chairs of
"Bread Not Stones" who are
passionate about advocating and
spreading awareness of child
poverty in Canada. They have rag
doll workshops with church groups
and the dolls are sewn or cut out
paper ones which they then use to
present to politicians and others who
can change policy and re -direct
funding concerning poverty.
These dolls are powerful symbols
which speak volumes that represent
1.33 million children in poverty in
our country. Each doll has a name
and a tag attached stating what
children and their families need
most: affordable housing, food
security, childcare, a living wage and
a national strategy.
The Fordwich United Church
women had a rag doll workshop and
made nine "Fordwich Dollies".
District President Barb Elg spoke
on ACWW and what good works
they do throughout the world.
ACWW is an association of women -
led societies and groups working
together for the improvement of the
quality of life for women and
communities worldwide. With 420
member societies in 73 countries,
ACWW gives voice to over nine
million rural and non -rural women.
Their concerns are the relief of
poverty, sickness and the protection
and preservation of health and
advancement of education. A light
lunch including Rev. Tolmay's stone
soup was then served.
