THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 2016. PAGE 21. Grey 160th plans continue to take shape By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Details are firming up for the Grey Township 160th anniversary celebration, which is set for June 24- 26. Since discussion about hosting a celebration for the anniversary of the township, now a ward in Huron East, first began, numerous meetings have been held and the weekend is beginning to take shape. Alvin McLellan, a Huron East Councillor in the Grey Ward and one of the event's organizers, says that a number of people have since jumped aboard the event and are aiming to make it a memorable one in Grey's history. The special anniversary weekend will begin on Friday evening, June 24 at 6 p.m. at the Ethel ball park. There, the opening ceremonies will be held, although McLellan says they will be modest and likely include a few words from organizers and a first pitch to kick off the ball tournament. Who will be throwing out that first pitch, however, is still to be determined. McLellan says that he and other event organizers are on the lookout for a notable Grey resident — maybe even the township's oldest resident — to do the honours, but that search is still underway. After the short ceremony, games will start for the tournament and will continue through most of Saturday, wrapping up Saturday night. The evening will be complemented by a euchre tournament at North Woods Elementary School, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided, McLellan said. Saturday morning activities will begin at the Grey fire hall, in the west end of Ethel, with a hospitality area. The hospitality area will be hosted by Leona Armstrong, long-time resident and former Huron County Warden. The area will feature a collection of historic photographs from the community, as well as historical information about Grey. The area will be complemented by a display curated by Joan Bateman, the long-time secretary at Grey Central Public School, now North Woods Elementary School, featuring decades' worth of photographs and artifacts from the school over the years. Those two areas will open at the fire hall at 11 a.m., but will then close down an hour later for the duration of the anniversary parade, which begins at noon in the east end of Ethel by the ball park. The parade will run through the village and finish at North Woods Elementary School, where a fun day for area children will be held Saturday afternoon. The hospitality area will open again around 1:30 p.m., and will feature live entertainment by Don and Dale Chesher and their band, who will be familiar to those who attend concerts throughout the Brussels and Belgrave areas. The band will play from 2-4 p.m., which will then lead to the set-up for the night's pork chop barbecue. The ball tournament will be ongoing all day and the ball park will feature a food booth and beer gardens for those looking for them. On Sunday morning, members of the Grey Fire Department will hold their annual firefighters' breakfast in the morning and in the afternoon, a decoration service will be held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, west of Ethel. It will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature a guest speaker. As the event continues to develop, check The Citizen for further details. BUY? SELL?
