The Citizen County supports monument Huron County Council has opted to support the placement of a light - armoured vehicle (LAV) monument near the Huron County Museum to the tune of $20,000. The initiative comes by way of the Goderich Legion, which was seeking a way to celebrate the region's soldiers who defended Canada's freedom in Afghanistan. Total cost for the project is projected to be between $40,000 and $50,000. While initially some of the requested services were to be in- kind through the county, Treasurer Michael Blumhagen explained that the grant would go towards construction and materials, so in- kind services are not really an option. He stated that funds would be available in the county's account for the unforeseen, should council choose to support the request. Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan said he was surprised when he read Blumhagen's report, saying that it represented a large increase from the $5,000 request that was originally presented. The potential placement of the monument also had an unusual twist to the agreement, councillors said, as it included a provision that the county would take over ownership of the monument once it's placed. Huron County Librarian and Director of Cultural Services Meighan Wark said she was simply adhering to museum best practices with that clause, saying that managing an artifact or exhibit owned by someone else tends to get complicated, so she felt ownership was the best way to proceed. Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek and Huron East Deputy -Mayor Joe Steffler quickly spoke in favour of the monument, saying that local Legions rarely, if ever, appear before council requesting funds and that Canada's freedom is certainly something worth celebrating and remembering. Howick Reeve Art Versteeg asked for Wark's input, saying that it should be up to museum staff as to whether or not they even want such a monument on the grounds. Wark, however, volleyed responsibility back to council, saying the decision was important enough that it should be made by council and that museum staff would then follow that direction. Bluewater Mayor Tyler Hessel said that while it is a good project, he felt council was becoming a funding source for projects throughout the community, which wasn't best practice in his opinion. Van Diepenbeek, however, defended the request, saying he couldn't believe that councillors were even "quibbling" about it and felt it should be approved as presented. In the end, councillors agreed and approved the funding request. Staff will now work together to find the best possible location for the monument, which has yet to be finalized.
