Warm weather marks start of spring in Brussels

Spring has arrived. It actually feels
like it now, not just those few days
At the Branch
that smelled right, but no, it really,
really is spring.
The movement of people and birds
is one sign, the changing shades of
green in our landscape is another and
the feel of the dirt in your fingers is
the third one that says the next
season has arrived. Enjoy.
Listening to other age groups is
always a good thing. For one, it lets
you know that all people think
differently and once again there is no
right answer for many issues. That
comes from my very much missed
friend Sheila Richards who said you
should have friends in every age
group and she led by example.
So as we move into warmer
weather the Grade 8 students are set
in planning for Camp Celtic or
Bimini. For the Grade 8 students,
this is their time to bond with their
schoolmates. This time is seen as
very important in their life journey,
for them is a rite to passage to their
next step of life. Friendships are
formed and blossom in overnight
stays and for the lucky ones, this
bond will continue and serve them in
the hills and valleys of life. As adults
we need to work at keeping friends,
especially ones not ever present. To
our young friends chat about
friendship and the need and benefits
of good ones.
We are an eating community. The
Melville folks are offering their fine
cooking for next Sunday, April 24.
Tickets are available and you can eat
anytime between 4:30 and 7 p.m.

In the first few months of 2016, the Brussels Lions Club has been holding special breakfasts
at the Brussels Legion to help the Legion's Boost the Build campaign. The meals have gone
so well that the club plans to continue them to raise money for community betterment. The
Lions made their presentation of $6,000 to the Legion on Saturday as the Lions celebrated
their 70th anniversary. From left: Lion President John Gillis, Sandra Josling of the Legion and

We start this week at the Brussels
Legion Branch with a request. The
Brussels Legion Pipe Band is
looking for some new members. The
playing of the pipes has been a long-
standing opportunity for many folks
around the Brussels area. A new
member can be any age, young or
old, and at one time as many as 20 of
varying ages, were members of the
band. You will be taught how to play
the pipes and I believe instruction in
drumming, is available. They
practise on Thursday evenings at the
Brussels Legion. Pipe Major Don
Martin can also answer all your
questions and looks forward to
hearing from any and all interested
folks.
The Thursday night darts have an
average of 10-12 darters each night.
Last week there were 10 darters.
Winners were: first, John
Stadelmann and Marlene Rutledge;
second, Jim Brown and Sandra
Josling; high, Gord Jacklin, 115 and
Sandra, 125. This week at darts there
were 11 darters out for fun. Winners
were: first, Roger McHardy and Deb
Burch; second, Gord Jacklin; high,
Sandra Josling, 126. Darts will be
winding down with the last night on
April 21.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by the normal
crowd of approximately 15 people.
It was nice to have Mary Bradshaw
back to help for the evening. This
week will be roast beef.
Saturday was a busy day with two
events at the Brussels Legion
Branch. The Saturday afternoon
euchre had 15 tables of players
hoping to take home a prize.
Winners were: first, Ariel Wood and
Paulene Bennett, 79; second, Joann
MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 78;
third, Mae Ritchie and Lillian
Appleby, 74; low, Bruce and Carol
Hoelscher, 39; lone hands, Helen
Dobson and Viola Adams and
Marilyn and Emma. Euchre is every
two weeks. We are still looking for a
Comrade to help out once a month,
so if interested please call the

The upstairs was filled with the
many members of the Brussels
Lions Club celebrating their 70th
anniversary with a dinner on
Saturday. They had almost 70 enjoy
the roast beef/chicken dinner.
Comrades helping at the Branch
included Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Jo -Arm McDonald,
Sandra Josling and Linda Bird. A
special presentation was made to the
Branch by the Lions Club to assist in
the accessibility project. Our many
thanks to them.
I made a mistake in the date for
the next Lions Club breakfast at the
Legion. It will be held on Sunday,
May 1 and not this past weekend.
The date was changed and I didn't
get the information in time to change
the advertisement. Sorry for any
inconvenience this may have caused.
The Branch will miss Linda Bird
as she has been a one-man painting
crew around the Branch for the past
three months. She has freshened up
most of the old building and
everyone comments on how good it
looks. She has now gone back to her
regular seasonal employment and
we hope she has a great summer.
The Sunday night dance had a
crowd of over 70 people enjoy the
music of Tri -Country band. They
play great music and are well liked.
They will be back in two weeks for
all to enjoy.
It will be elections at the general
meeting on April 27 and we hope
many of the Branch members will
attend. We hope there are members
out there that would like to be part of
the Executive and the running of the
Branch. New faces and new ideas
are a positive for the Branch. There
is normally one meeting a month,
the fourth Tuesday of the month.
Call the Branch for
more information.

Planning ahead the Lions and
Leos had such a fine time feeding us
breakfast at the Legion, they're
going to do it again. Those last two
breakfasts gave the Legion around
$6,000 toward their building
improvements. So on May 1 plan to
have breakfast with the Lions, this
time the profits go to community
betterment and we know over the
years, the Lions Club has done a
marvelous job of that.
So May 1, breakfast, mark it
down.
Enjoy this season of growth.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
