TRY CLASSIFIED Assisted suicide debate very live one in Canada Continued from page 14 demise when the pain and discomfort mounted because he valued the intrinsic dignity and worth of human life with which he had been endowed by his Creator. He did not consider it something to take into his own hands and cut short prematurely. He was sustained daily by appropriate palliative care means, helpful pain control medication, and the loving attention of family and friends. Such factors help a person immeasurably to face the difficult days of one's final stages when terminally ill. The issue of assisted suicide is a very live one in Canada at present. In February, 2015 the Supreme Court of Canada struck down a longstanding law against physician - assisted suicide. The federal government now has until June, 2016 to choose between various options. In recent months, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) developed a joint "Declaration Against Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide" which articulates the approach of those faith groups to this controversial issue. Canadians are divided on it. One poll showed 77 per cent support physician - assisted suicide. But the availability of quality palliative care is a major factor. Dr. Michael Koke, a palliative care physician in Kitchener, notes: "When I hear about 80 per cent of Canadians wanting physician - assisted suicide, what I hear is they don't want pain and suffering when they die. If we address it with good palliative care, then I think it goes down to one or two per cent." As a country, in the past we have resisted any move towards assisted suicide. The EFC's Bruce Clemenger notes, "The reason for the blanket ban on assisted suicide has been twofold — to promote life and protect the vulnerable. The government has argued the sanctity of human life is a valid goal to promote in Canadian society... The Supreme Court has said 'the sanctity of life is one of our most fundamental societal values.— A variety of factors such as poverty, addiction, stresses, lack of community, chronic disease, disability, and mental illness, all tend to make many people in Canada vulnerable. The government argues allowing assisted suicide is too risky for people who are `decisionally vulnerable'. There have also been some alarming stories coming out of jurisdictions which have already legalized the practice. Alex Schadenberg (Euthanasia Preven- tion Coalition) points out that in Belgium and the Netherlands: patients are being euthanized without having made an explicit request. Nurses are illegally administering lethal drugs. Between 2003 and 2011 the number of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands doubled. In one Belgian study, half the euthanasia deaths went unreported. And, older people were more likely to be victims of unreported euthanasia deaths. Our government's position in the past, which is averse to assisted suicide, accords to the beliefs Christians have inferred from the Bible. No one has the power or authority over the day of one's death (Ecclesiastes 8:8). The Ten Commandments prohibit murder (Exodus 20:13). It is a grievous offence to kill another person, for we are made in God's image (Genesis 9:6). The Psalmist (139:16) prays, "In your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them" Euthanasia or assisted suicide attempt to usurp God's authority in this area. In conclusion, let's be encouraged by the wisdom of aging theologian J.I. Packer on the subject of weakness. "Lean on Christ and rely on him to supply through the Holy Spirit all the strength you need for his service, no matter how weak unhappy circumstances and unfriendly people may be making you feel at present...Lean on Christ, the lover of your soul, as Paul did [2Cor.12:7-10], and in all your ongoing weakness, real as it is, you too will be empowered to cope and will be established in comfort and joy„ Donate your reusable clothing to us Call Clothesline at 1-800-505-5525 today to schedule your FREE pick-up! <ntOCIICel « cLOTHELINE ouoU9rWE I • 800•505•5525 All word ads in The Citizen classifieds are put on our webpage at www.northhuron.on.ca
