A year-end streak not to be beat
The local Novice Girls team, which pulled players from across northern and central Huron
County, earned provincial gold over the weekend, the top accolade the team can manage.

The local Novice Girls team that
will be known as the Huron Heat
next year has set a pretty high bar for
those who follow by winning their
provincial championship over the
weekend.
The team, which draws players
from Bayfield, Clinton, Hensall,
Seaforth, Goderich, Blyth and
Brussels is a proof of concept
according to Scott Meyer, the coach
of the squad, for the Huron Heat,
A great season
The Wingham Curling Club marked the end of its season on April 6 with its year-end banquet
and awards presentation. Twelve teams played out three draws over the course of the season.

Market in Morris-Turnberry. (Vicky Bremner photo)
which aims to pull all levels of girls
in from across these communities to
provide competitive hockey for
them.
Meyer explained the team was the
first with members from the
communities' previous
organizations, the West Huron Wave,
Bayfield-Clinton-Hensall [BCH] and
the Blyth Brussels minor hockey
associations, to take to the ice.
"They didn't lose a single game
and didn't let in a single goal all
weekend," he said. "It was a great
weekend.
The team faced off against the
South Huron Sabres in the gold
medal game and defeated their
neighbours by a score of 2-0 to take
the top spot. Earlier the team bested
the Lucan Irish 4-0, the Waterloo
Ravens 3-0, the Sault Ste Marie
Wildcats 9-0 and the Monkton
Wildcats 3-0. The team also tied the
Chatham Outlaws 0-0.
While the entire team played well,
according to Meyer, he said goalie
Kyla Fisher deserved a special
mention.
"She faces a lot of shots," he said.
"In game three, she must have had
30 shots on her. She hasn't let a goal
past her in nine games."
The team's year-end success
marked a rally for them according to
Meyer.
"We were middle of the pack
throughout the year," he said. "We
were playing Stratford and St. Marys
and we were pretty even all year."
For the playoffs, their pool of
opponents grew to include South
Huron and St. Thomas and from
there the team started an undefeated
streak, winning three games and
tying three before winning their
local playoffs two games straight.
"After that, we went to provincials
and kept winning there," Meyers
said. The Midget C Girls also played
over the weekend in their provincial
tournament, however the squad
didn't find the same success.
The team won its first game
against Gloucester 1-0 on Friday,
then tied West Nipissing 1-1.
Saturday, however, the team was
bested by Markdale 3-1 and then
eliminated by Almaguin 3-0 in the
quarter -finals.
Coach Brian Coombs said making
it to provincials was fantastic and
marked the end of a season of which
the team could be proud.
"Overall, we've had a great year,"
he said. "The girls played well. They
won a Silver Stick tournament and
ended up in the top eight teams in
their division in Ontario."
Coombs added that the squad
finished second in a tournament in
Orillia in January.
"The season was great and the
players and parents were all great,"
he said. "Sometimes you just don't
get to the end"
