Federation of Agriculture marks 75 years with gala Adopting new roles As part of the Huron County Federation of Agriculture's gala celebrating 75 years, 2017 International Plowing Match Committee members did their best to impersonate local individuals. No one was safe as community leaders like Jack Ryan, Graeme and Helen Craig and several McGavins found themselves being brought to life by others. (Photo submitted) PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 The Huron County Federation of Agriculture celebrated 75 years on the weekend with a dinner and gala fundraising night. They were raising funds for the commodity groups for their meals at the 2017 International Plowing Match (IPM). A group of the IPM committee members put on a very amusing skit for the entertainment. They were impersonating several locals including Brian McGavin doing an excellent impersonation of the IPM home farm owner, Jack Ryan. Others included Matt Townsend as Graeme Craig, George Townsend as Helen Craig, Jeff McGavin as Lynne Godkin, Lynne Godkin as Marie McGavin and Roger Robertson as Matt Townsend. Neil McGavin portrayed himself as did Don and Maja Dodds. The skit was just for fun and not necessarily true, but was done to add some lightheartedness to the very important jobs and folks planning the 2017 IPM. Reports are it was great! With the return of Helen Craig and Margaret Mclnroy, the plans will be initiated full force for the anniversary celebration of the Walton Women's Institute. They are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the formation of the group. They are hoping to have former members come out for an evening of reminiscing and renewing old friendships of former and current members. The evening is being planned for May 18. Look for more information to follow. The McKillop ladies gathered for their monthly birthday and girls get- together at the Walton Inn last week. The ladies celebrated Carol Reinink's birthday! Having a lot of laughs were Karen Braecker, Jennifer Vellinga, Yolanda Gubelmann, Carol and Jeannette Robinson. Happy birthday Carol! Betty Glanville has been a busy girl since returning from holiday. She and Ken were away about 20 days to Davenport, Iowa. They were attending the "Gathering of the Green" which is the 8020 John Deere Tractor reunion, which is held every two years. They had a great time visiting with many of the friends they have met over the years and they had the opportunity to meet one of the original engineers of the 8020. But why is Betty so busy? She is busy at the final preparations for the Breath of Spring event in Seaforth next Wednesday. Meetings concerning decorating, speakers, food and all those last minute things. The night has speakers covering outside beauty, inside decorating, satisfying tastebuds and positive health. A full evening that benefits Community mourns for local family's losses A cute e-mail has a Google search looking for spring. Comes up error! No spring found. Seems very fitting as we bounce between a few nice days and some crazy winter weather again and again. We know spring will arrive, we just need patience I guess. When it does arrive, by the looks of the broken branches from the trees, we will spend a lot longer raking and picking up the mess from the lawn. The big wind from a week ago caused more than just tree branches to come down. The top of the Blake silo looks like it was given a half twist and peeled at the top. There will have to be some repairs done when good weather comes. Our condolences to the family of Caroline Kernaghan on her passing. She will be missed by her children Michael, Anne and Mary Jean and their families. She spent many years in Brussels working at the former Export Packers, babysitting and helping out anyone who needed assistance. She was a caring and lovely lady who many have missed around town. Our sympathies to all. Our sympathies to the Sauve- Schade families on the passing of Ruth Sauve-Schade. Ruth will be missed by her husband Neil Schade and her children Glen, Sandra, Dale and Beth and step children Don, Kent and Carol and their families Ruth was a remarkable woman and her mind was very sharp. She was clerk of the town of Brussels and was well respected for a job well done. She will be missed by all. Figure skating is a highlight to the lives of many including Helen and Shannon Craig and Helen's sister Mary Elliott of Vancouver. The trio attended the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston, Massachusetts the last week of March. They went a couple of days ahead and spent them sightseeing. They took the hop -on, hop -off buses around the very old city. There is certainly lots to see and they spent part of a rainy day at the History Museum. They also went to Harvard University just to say "we went to Harvard!" They also went on the harbour cruise. It was very windy but they still walked and walked and walked. The arena where the championships were held is very old and there were plenty of steps to climb every day they attended. They were pleased that a Canadian team won the gold in pairs competition. They flew home on the very wintery Monday and the flight to Vancouver was delayed five hours and the Ontario flight just an hour, but they all arrived safely! Many Brussels area folks were saddened to hear of the passing of a dear friend's daughter. Merle McIntosh's daughter Bonnie of Alberta, passed away last week. She will be missed by her siblings Bruce, Heather and Barry and their families. Our sympathies to all. Happier news is the arrival of another great-grandchild for Marie Blake. The happy parents are Darren and Katie (Williamson) Janmaat. They have welcomed Ava, a little sister for Jackson to the family. Tom and Joyce Williamson are happy to have two boys and two girls to even the grandchildren count. Graeme Craig needed a break away, so when Helen returned from her trip to Boston, they loaded up in the car and drove to Calabogie. Where is Calabogie you ask? Calabogie is north of Ottawa but not as far as Renfrew. They went to Dart club ends season The Cranbrook Dart Club ended their winter dart season on April 6. They started with 23 players and ended with 21 for the season. They had 18 eager and hungry players enjoy the catered roast beef dinner, prior to ending the dart season. The three missing players missed a great meal. The pesky Team 5 of Murray Houston and Rita Bowers won all six games again. It was suggested that Murray should turn PRO! The high lady was Teuni Smith, 105 and Murray, 133 and lucky shot, Ern Lewington. The year-end stats had Marita LeFor as top lady with 110 and top man, George Zwep, 140; top team was, surprise! Team 5 winning 51 games out of 84 in 14 weeks. Congratulations to all! The group has had a lot of fun and laughs with each other — nothing serious with this gang! They hope to all gather again to play in January of 2017. They have appreciated everyone's help in keeping the hall accessible through the winter, heat on, cleaning chores, supplies and snacks provided each week. They hope all have a good spring, summer and harvest and come back again in winter! visit Rick and Margaret Mclnroy who have been there for a couple of weeks. the Huron Perth Lung Association and Seaforth Agricultural Home Craft Division. Sounds like a lot of work and fun. Celebrating birthdays this past week include Ron Driscoll, Matthew Huether, George Love, Kevin Wilbee, Marie McGavin, Heather Dunbar, Bonnie Hastings, Shannon Craig, Cole Zwep, Doug Mitchell, Katheryn Emmrich Johnston, Jack Ryan, Trevor Sutcliffe, Mitch Blake and Theresa Pryce.
