Hullett's Mielhausen pens district's best essay
Big winner
Emily Mielhausen went further than any student in memory,
according to Hullett Central Public School staff, when her
essay won the District C competition this year. Her essay,
called 'To See Through a Soldier's Eyes' was a tough piece
to create, but Mielhausen said putting herself in another's
shoes was a challenge she found informative. Mielhausen

The Citizen
Hullett Central Public School
student Emily Mielhausen brought
home the highest honour a student
from the Blyth Legion's area has
achieved in collective memory when
she won the District 'C' Royal
Canadian Legion Essay contest.
After winning at her school,
Mielhausen went on to be victorious
at the branch, zone and district levels
before competing at the provincial
level with her essay "To See
Through a Soldier's Eyes".
For Mielhausen, the essay marks
several firsts: it was her first time
advancing in the contest, the first
essay that she has ever written
outside of school tasks, and the first
time she looked at how life was like
for the people in war.
"I wasn't really sure what to
write," she said. "When I'm reading
or watching movies, though, I'm
always trying to put myself in the
character's shoes so I tried to think
what it would be like for them. I
wondered how a soldier would feel
or how a soldier's wife would feel
and that's what I wrote about"
Mielhausen entered all the
categories she could, and the essay
was the last one she tackled, saying
she felt it might be the most difficult.
She said everything had to come
from her own imagination, which
made it difficult.
"My dad told me about relatives
who were in the war, but I didn't
really have many stories about
them," she said. "I just had to put
myself into the writing. When you
do that and write like that, it
becomes more personal and you can
go deeper that way"
Mielhausen, a Grade 6 student,
recently moved to Hullett Central
Public School from St. Mary's
Catholic School in Goderich. She
said her previous school didn't put
as much of a focus on the Legion -
sponsored contest as Hullett staff do,
which really encouraged her to
participate.
She also won at the branch level,
earning a first place finish for her
black and white poster and a third
place finish for her colour poster.
TO SEE THROUGH A
SOLDIER'S EYES
By Emily Mielhausen
To see through a soldier's eyes, to
suffer through many deaths,
constantly having to risk their lives
for something that may not be
accomplished. To have to worry
about whether or not you can sleep.
If you are tired or cold you just have
to carry on. To have to miss your
family, your children, you may never
see them again. I couldn't imagine
this. For the men who had to leave
their homes, we remember.
To see through the soldiers' wives'
eyes. To be lonely on cold winter's
nights. To have to work, and take
care of children. To have to miss
your husband at night. To have to
think he might not come back. To
long for another night curled up in
his arms... safe. I couldn't imagine
this, but they had to live it. For this,
we remember.
To see through the soldier's
children's eyes. Missing their daddy,
night after night. Taking on more
chores than they can handle. Trying
to be on their best behaviour for
their mothers. But secretly inside
they long for a picnic, just relaxing
on the grass, playing tag with daddy.
They long for their daddy, but
nobody can fill that place. I couldn't
live like that. And for that, we
remember.
To see through a man's eyes, a
man who wants to help. But for
whatever reason didn't or couldn't
join the army. Imagine the guilt they
felt, just simply not being able to
help. Every day they hear women
crying, when letters are sent that her
husband has passed. Regret fills
their days as they look for ways to
help. What a tough life that
would be, and I couldn't live it. To
the men who tried to help, we
remember.
Lest we forget.
