Be a witness to the truth
By Pastor Andrew Versteeg

Chapel
A witness. We are always looking
for credible witnesses to verify and
give proof of events. We read police
reports and they often end with an
appeal to eye -witnesses to come
forward with information that may
be helpful in solving a problem.
On the biblical calendar we are in
the period of time between Jesus'
resurrection on Easter and the day
that He ascended back to heaven.
This is a period of 40 days, as it says
in Acts 1:3, in which Jesus made
Himself known to many people as
proof of the fact that He had risen.
An effort had been made to keep this
fact silent, but the words of
witnesses who saw Jesus and spoke
with Him after His resurrection are
overwhelming.
Jesus had first of all appeared to
Mary by the empty tomb on Easter
morning, and from there He began
appearing to His disciples who had
been with Him before His death, and
then He appeared to others as well. 1
Corinthians 15:5-8 says, "He
appeared to Peter, then the rest of the
twelve disciples, after that He
appeared to more than five hundred
at one time, then to James and the
rest of the apostles"
So there were many eye-
witnesses, and these witnesses also
heard Him speak and interacted with
Him.
Now, why did Jesus appear to so
many people? It is because He wants
the world to know that He rose from
the dead. He wanted the world to
know that many witnesses had seen
Him and He wanted the world to
hear the testimony of these
witnesses. This is what Jesus told
them, "you shall be My witnesses
both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and even to the
remotest part of the earth" Jesus was
going to send out these witnesses
with the message of the resurrection.
Sometimes we want to tell others
about Jesus but we are not sure just
where to start or what to say. Maybe
a suggestion could be to start with
the resurrection and explain that His
resurrection indicates that the
payment for sin that He made with
His own life was made in full.
Someone might object and say,
"How do you know that Jesus rose
again, is there proof?" And you can
point to the fact that there were
hundreds of eye -witnesses that saw
Him and heard Him again after He
died. Nobody in Jesus' day disputed
His death; what they disputed was
His resurrection, but the evidence of
the eye -witnesses removes any
doubt.
This all took place approximately
2,000 years ago, but what about
today; is there evidence of His

resurrection today? Yes there is.
Everyone who knows Jesus as their
Savior is a witness today of the
resurrection of Jesus. Our lives give
witness to this fact, because through
the gift of faith we have come to
know Jesus as our risen Saviour.
The scriptures teach us that we
were once dead in our sin, but He
made us alive with Him and raised
us up with Him (Ephesians 2:1-6).
This truth is evidenced in us and
our lives now give witness to the fact
that we have been made alive
through faith in Jesus. It becomes
evident that we love Jesus and we
love His ways.
This past weekend, I was at a
birthday for a friend who had grown
up in this community. In his early
40s he came to know Jesus as His
