Community mourns Hoegy in former church PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 It is Monday morning and we are back to winter it seems as I write. I thought on Sunday evening we would have a snow day from the bus, but no such luck in the morning. The roads were slippery, so patience and slower speeds were needed by all. It was party time last weekend for my friend Lily Fincham. She celebrated the milestone of reaching 90 years of age and is as bright and funny as can be. She has two daughters, Valerie Gratto of Brussels, who arranged the party and daughter Chris, from near Ottawa, who was unable to attend. The party folks gathered at the Jam Jar for a delicious birthday luncheon. Special guests included her grandson Jason and wife Anne and their four beautiful daughters and granddaughter Jennifer and husband Robbie and their two boys from Stittsville. Her neighbours from the Kerr apartments Ken and Liz Sholdice, Nell Bentinck and friends Bob Tyerman and Joan Smith and Mike Hamilton also attended the fun gathering. After 17 years of living in Brussels, it was hard to include all her friends, at least that's what she told me! Happy birthday Lily!! It must be spring because babies are arriving for many. Our congratulations to Gord and Joanne Machan on the arrival of their first grandchild. Their daughter Julie and John Kreis have welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Lily to the family. Congrats to all! Ted and Marlene Little are excited to have another little granddaughter added to their family. Rick and Anita McLeod have welcomed a little girl, Avery Paige, to be a little sister to Chelsey. Congrats to all. Congratulations to Tim and Ronna Lee as they have welcomed their twin boys. The boys arrived and are doing very well. Jack Bryan and Weston Ronald will keep the Lee family busy. They are the second set of twin boys for Grandma Christine Lee and the Lee family. Congrats to all! We send out our get -well wishes to Jean Bridge as she is in hospital at this time. We hope they can get to the root of her troubles. It is nice to see Don and Pat Dalton home from their month away in Florida. They went to Daytona Beach and arrived to very nice weather, although both of them became very sick with the cold. The condo was right on the ocean and they could watch the dolphins swimming each morning from the balcony. The week of March Break they were joined by daughter Carla and husband Eric and their children Jordan, Brody and Ellie. They swam in the pool, walked the beach looking for shells and built sand castles to keep them busy. The next week son Gerrid and wife Val and children Braelyn, Sydney, Mac and Coby came for a week. Again swimming, shells and castles were popular pastimes. The family went to Disneyworld for a day and Nana joined them. Pat reports the line-ups were terrible and there were lots of people! They spent Easter Sunday at the condo with Gerrid's family and Pat's sister and her family. It was a very enjoyable time and no one wanted to come home. They will just have to wait until next year when they return to Florida again. Nice to have you folks home. Our condolences to Karen Hoegy and family on the passing of her husband Barry Hoegy. He will be missed by their children Darryl, Ben and Sherry and families. Barry was a quiet -spoken man and a friend to many. He farmed on Blyth Road and was a volunteer firefighter for Grey Township for many years. He loved to hunt and fish and spend time with his family. He was a member of the former Duff's United Church all his life and with the gracious permission of the new owners, the funeral luncheon was served at the former church. Members of the community provided the lunch. Our sympathies to all. It was party time in Auburn on the weekend as Matt Lee celebrated the milestone of 40 years. He was joined in the celebration by his family and his many friends and it Locals excel at robotics competition Heather McGavin Kelso and three of her children, Jessica, Hayden and Jared, were here in Southwestern Ontario from North Bay on the weekend. They were volunteering at the University of Waterloo at the FIRST Robotics competition. Home base was at Neil and Marie's even though they were away. FIRST means For Inspiration and Recognition of Science Technology. The Kelso children are part of the North Bay and area community robotics team through Canador College. Their team has just won the FIRST North Bay Regional event for the third time and the opportunity to compete at the world's FIRST robotic competition in St. Louis Missouri again. Their team has won the Chairman's Award twice and this year won the Engineering Inspirational Award. The program they compete in is announced in January by the FIRST group and this year was titled First Strong Hold. The clubs then had six weeks to design the game, which must be able to cross the defences and shoot at the strong hold. They have to build the robot, write essays about their project, present their game to the judges and speak with the judges concerning the project. It is a multi -disciplinary project for the team. It is a very competitive event and congrats to the Kelso children on their success and good luck in Missouri. Another member of the Zwep family has enjoyed a wonderful trip to Ireland. Danica Zwep, daughter of George and Jane Zwep, spent two weeks along with friends touring Ireland and Scotland. Joining Danica were Jill Grobbecker, Amanda Miller, Lauren Vandewal and Jerod Tigert. Cody Janmaat joined the group for the second week. They first travelled to Boston for a one -day layover and then continued to arrive in Ireland. They rented a car and Danica quickly adjusted to steering and driving on the left side of the road. They drove to Blarney Castle, Killarney, Ring of Kerry and the Cliffs of Mohr before BUY? SELL? TRY CLASSIFIED arriving in Galway (where she lived for six months). This is where they celebrated St. Patrick's Day with some old friends. They then picked up Cody in Dublin and headed to Scotland for the second week. They caught the ferry in Belfast and stayed in Edinburgh for a couple of days of sightseeing including the Edinburgh Dungeon. They drove through the highlands and to Inverness, where the renowned Loch Ness monster is. They saw lots of castles in their travels and the scenery in both Ireland and Scotland was breathtaking. Their last two days were spent in Dublin where they toured the Guinness Brewery, the Brazen Head (oldest pub in Ireland) and enjoyed watching some Celtic dancing. Sounds like a fantastic trip the group will long remember and be able to talk about for years to come. The Cranbrook Dart Club welcomed 19 players out for the last game in March. Team 5 of Murray Houston and Ev Blake won five of their games. Jane Zwep was the top lady shooter hitting 105 and husband George Zwep the top man hitting 140, (maybe they are practising at home). Jim Blake was the lucky shot winner. The group wishes club members Nathan and Sarah Klingenberg best wishes on the birth of their baby boy, Ian, born a couple of weeks ago. FROM WALTON was quite the get-together. There was food and fun and noise for all. Happy birthday Matt! Celebrating birthdays this past week included the April Fool's Day babies, Matt Lee, Lily Fincham, Shirley Clark and Pamela Carter Cummings The month continues with Peter Bennett, Susan Yan Yu Watson, Corbin McCallum, Krista Shortreed Verkley, Duncan Wey, Gary Bennett, Nate Fritz, David Baan, Marlene Glanville,, Colleen McCallum Bromley, Donna Hannon, Stephen Gulutzen, Shelley McGavin, Doug J.
