Sports Curling Club finishes year with potluck, awards Brussels Curling Club finished its year with a potluck dinner and the presentation of the awards at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Friday evening. President of the 2015/16 season Mary Ann Thompson welcomed all 36 to the evening. She thanked all for coming and for the wonderful array of potluck dishes. She read a thank you from the bonspiel committee thanking everyone for their help from the draw committee, the morning coffee girl, to the prize collectors to the lunch committee and bar and ice help. It takes everyone to make the bonspiel a success and it was a real success for the club. She then proceeded to announce the draw winners for the season and present the prizes to all. The November/December draw had the first -place team of Steve Steiss, Don Chesher, Norm Dobson and Danica Zwep; second, Murray Hoover, Jeff Cardiff, Sandra Cable and Don Baan and third, George Zwep, Brian Warwick, Ken Penfound and Monique Baan. The December/ January draw had the winning team of Steve Steiss, Katherine Thomet and Dona Knight; second, Darrell Uhler, Ken Penfound, Karen Uhler and Sarah Alexander and third, Mike Alexander, Jennie Schimanski and Debbie Coultes. The final draw for February/March was won by no other than Steve Steiss, MaryAnn Thompson and Brent Alexander; second, Mike Alexander, Mary Bernard and Dona Knight and third, Murray Hoover, Ken Penfound, Norm Dobson and Doug Bremner. The overall winner of the D.A. Rann Memorial Trophy was the third draw winning team, skipped by Steve Steiss and was presented by incoming President Jeff Cardiff. Jeff spoke a few words of thanks to all and hoped everyone would be returning to curl in the fall and maybe bring a friend. He hoped everyone has a good summer and will see them on the ice! Top of the table The Brussels Curling Club celebrated yet another successful season on Friday night, with its year-end gala and awards ceremony. Taking home the D.A. Rann Trophy for the highest overall score were, above, from left: MaryAnn Thompson, Brent Alexander, Steve Steiss and Jeff Cardiff, the winners of the February/March draw. "We have to consider the revenue factor as well," he said. "I'm not making any suggestion on closing one, two or three arenas. I'm asking about what we could save by not providing ice in the arena." Director of Recreation and Facilities Pat Newson said the biggest challenge with the request, should it be approved by a motion at the next council meeting, is that the township doesn't operate the Belgrave Community Centre. "It's leased to another board," she said. "We have no control over their operations. It would be a separate request to their board to provide their figures. We can only provide figures for Wingham and Blyth" Chief Administrative Officer Sharon Chambers suggested council not debate the idea because of the amount of research necessary. She said if council gives direction on Vodden's suggestion at the next meeting, staff would then begin that research.
