Ladies' Night raises ,5,300 for Brussels recreation
A big show
Guest speakers were just one of the attractions at the first ever Ladies' Night fundraiser at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on March 31. The event featured great treats, a
silent auction and all sorts of useful information from guest speakers like Nicole Prentice, left,
and Natalie Vandenberg who spoke about essential oils. The night was a fundraiser for
recreation throughout the Brussels community put on by the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre Board. (Denny Scott photo)

A NOTE FROM BETTY

Well April Fool's Day is gone for
another year. I hope you had at least
one success in tricking someone for
at least a moment.
Tax season is in full swing with
papers being searched and numbers
being questioned and sighs of relief
expelled when it's done for another
year.
The Brussels Recreation Board
held its first ladies' night last
At the Branch
Thursday. Ladies of all ages were
out to support the recreation folks.
Good company, informative and
interesting speakers, local business
displays and dessert for all was
offered.
It was a fun evening. Silent
auction bidding offered an
opportunity to chat with others and
the bartenders did a good job of
refreshing the masses. It was a well-
planned evening. Thanks and we'll
come again.
When someone dies, the direct
connection they had with your life
starts the memories flowing. Two
good women died last week.
Caroline Kernaghan lived her life in
Brussels until a couple of years ago,
then moved to a very neat retirement
spot in Lambeth. She was my first
childcare lady, (25 cents/hour, that
tells you the era of number one son
Chris). St. Ambrose was the better
for Caroline and her wisdom and
knowledge was valued as an original
board member of 5R's. Her love of
fun, made
companion
nature and plain
her a good
on escapades.
My memories of Ruth Sauve
Schade include working with
Conestoga College to bring classes
to Brussels, United Church work
and municipal council business of
the 1980s. Her mind and humour
made her fun to work alongside. So
thinking back to the 1970s and
1980s and up to this week takes a
little time. Once again, it's the
people who have touched our lives
and the choices we make about those
folks that makes us who we are. So
I'm thankful to call Caroline and
Ruth friends.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Rutledge, Josling win dart night
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch started with Huron Feeding
Systems hosting a meeting for
clients with Shivvers Drying
Systems. They listened to guest
speakers both morning and
afternoon and enjoyed a roast beef
dinner at noon. Working at preparing
the meal were Linda Bird, Mabel
Glanville and Jo -Ann McDonald.
The Thursday night darts had a
good group of darters enjoying the
evening. Winners were: first,
Marlene Rutledge and Sandra
Josling, second, Wayne Smith and
Gord Jacklin and high, Sandra,126.
The league is into the last month
with the final night being April 21.
The Friday night supper was back
with bone -in ham and was served to
a very small crowd. This week
Sandra Josling will be cooking a
chicken breast dish.

postponed Valentine's dinner and
dance on Friday evening with a good
turnout. They enjoyed a spaghetti
dinner and then a dance followed.
They had a good time.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had a good bunch enjoying the
afternoon of cards. Winners were:
first, Helen Dobson and Viola
Adams, 80; second, Carol and Lou
Lohey, 76 and Bush Whittard and
Lloyd Glanville, 71; low, Marg and
Grace, 44 and six was the number of
lone hands for the unknown winner.
There was no Sunday night dance
but it will return in two weeks.
The painting is almost completed
at the Branch with thanks to Linda
Bird for all her hard work. The
colour choosing committee was
Sandra Josling and Nanci
Ducharme. Good work ladies.
The

More than 200 ladies attended a
special event tailored to them at the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre last Thursday
night and the event was a huge
success according to organizers.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre Board hosted its
first ever Ladies' Night at the
community centre and Board Chair
Nicole Noble said she felt the event
went really well.
"We raised $5,300 which will go
to recreation programming and
facilities in Brussels," she said. "I
think everyone seemed to enjoy the
night."
Noble, said the speakers held
everyone's attention and, when they
were speaking, it was quiet.
"I think the ladies really liked the
topics," she said. "We tried to do
different things for different age
groups."
The speakers spoke on
organization and clutter, health and
essential oils and attendees also had
the chance to visit the vendors or
participate in a silent auction.
"We had 223 people in attendance
and 16 vendors," Noble said. "We
feel that was a nice number. People
could still get around and get to all
the tables. Anything else would've
been too cramped."
Noble said that positive comments
came from the vendors as well as the
attendees. Those manning their own
tables appreciated the way the event
was run.
"They loved the fact that we did
intermissions between the speakers,"
Noble said. "That let people get up,
go to the silent auction tables and
check with the vendors. Sometimes
vendors can get missed at events like
this because they are closing up after
it starts and they don't get people
back to the tables, so the
intermissions were very good"
The event came about as a means
of the recreation board raising
money more for the area.
"We wanted to do something and
we needed ideas," Noble said. "I
looked at the men who always have
their harvest stag in the hall and
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
realized the ladies should have
something as well. The idea went
well and the board really took charge
and made it happen."
The board is looking at the event
happening again, Noble said, as it
was well received. She said that,
thanks to the donations and the
vendors, the event was a big success.
"The vendors donated to the
auction instead of being charged for
their space," she said. "We're really
lucky to have businesses back us and
support us like that"
