Learn about Lent from the Bible: Versteeg
By Pastor Andrew Versteeg
Brussels Community Bible
Chapel
We are now approximately at the
midpoint of the season of Lent. Lent
is a 40 -day liturgical period
preceding Easter. This year Lent
began on Wednesday, Feb. 10 and
ends Saturday, March 26 (the
Sundays during this period not
included in Lent).
Many people around the world
observe Lent as a means to prepare
for Easter. People fast from food,
serve, read, pray and observe other
such things in order to separate
themselves from the distractions of
life and focus their minds and hearts
on the crucifixion and resurrection
of Jesus.
The observance of Lent is not
something that God specifically
taught or commanded in His Word.
If you decide to observe Lent, that
can be good, and if you decide not
to, that is alright as well. But the idea
of preparing for Easter is in the
Bible.
Let me explain and let me
encourage you to read some
passages in the Scriptures during
this Lenten season to prepare your
mind and heart for Easter.
The crucifixion and resurrection
of Jesus is found in the first four
books of the New Testament. The
Bible is divided into an Old
Testament and a New Testament.
The New Testament begins with the
birth of Jesus and the first four
books, Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John all record the death and
resurrection of Jesus. The Old
Testament is the historical account
of what God was doing from the
time of creation until the appearing
of Jesus on earth. The Old Testament
was a long historical period,
approximately 4,000 years in which
God was preparing His people for

Jesus Is Lord!
the coming of Jesus.
Then Jesus appears and Matthew,
Mark, Luke and John all record His
actions and teaching that in His life
led Him to the cross. The focus on
the cross is becoming clearer and we
know, as we read these first four
books of the New Testament, that
Jesus will die soon. There is a
growing following of Jesus, and
there is also a growing hostility
toward Him. Numerous attempts are
made on His life, and schemes and
plots are being devised as to how
they might have Jesus killed and put
away.
If you read the gospels you will
see that the cross and the
resurrection are the climax.
Approximately half of what is
written in each gospel is about the
last weeks before the cross where
Jesus tells His followers that He will
be going to Jerusalem to die and rise
again. From that point on Jesus
begins deliberately to travel in that
direction. We don't know the exact
time frame here, but it might have
BRUSSELS
been something corresponding to 40
days. We are not sure.
Then the last week before Jesus is
crucified, when He arrives in
Jerusalem, makes up about one third
of the material of these first four
books. This includes the account of
Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.
The cross and the resurrection is the
climax of the Scripture. Indeed, if
we truly understand what Jesus
accomplished at this time, we will
see that the death and resurrection of
Jesus was also the greatest moment
in all of history. The books that
follow the first four in the New
Testament give us the instruction as
to how we are to live in light of the
cross and in anticipation of His next
coming.
I would like to encourage you in
this season of Lent to get a Bible and
read some passages that will prepare
your heart for Easter. At the same
time ask God to enable you to
understand and make this personal
this Easter. You can `Google' these
references as well.

MINISTER: Rev. Gary Clark, BA, M. Div.
OFFICE: 519-523-4224
In the Old Testament:
1. Genesis 22:1-14 - God provides
a ram.
2. Exodus 12:1-32 - The Passover.
3. Psalm 22:1-18 -Foretells Jesus'
suffering on the cross.
4. Isaiah 53:1-12 - Foretells Jesus
who God would send to suffer and
die.
In the New Testament you might
want to start at Luke 22 and read the
next three chapters to the end of the
book. If you would like to read a
longer section that gives the last
weeks before the cross you could
start at Mark 8: 31 and read to the
end of the book.
Above all remember that the cross
and the resurrection of Jesus was
God's plan of love, grace and justice
to us sinners. It is the provision, the
only provision, by which we can be
forgiven from our sin and receive
peace with God and the promise of
life forever with Him.
