girls squads continue in playoffs
Trying hard
The local Bantam C Girls squad took on their competition from South Huron on Feb. 27 at the
Blyth and District Community Centre but were unable to come away with a win. The South
Huron Sabres bested the Bantam girls 3-1. The team will next face off against the Mitchell
Meteors in Mitchell on March 4. (Denny Scott photo)
Huron Heat to begin tryouts
The Blyth Brussels Minor Hockey
Association (BBMHA), the
Bayfield, Clinton, Hensall (BCH)
Minor Hockey Association and the
West Huron Wave Girls Hockey
Association are coming together
under the new Huron Heat banner to
offer a comprehensive girls hockey
experience for Huron County
players.
The Heat, which will have teams
in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey
League, the Ontario Women's
Hockey Association (OWHA) and
the Western Ontario Girls Hockey
League, has been a creation in the
works for the past two years
according to committee co-chair
Dave Burns.
"As players will know, BCH and
Blyth Brussels have been working
together for their girls' programs for
two seasons now," Burns said. "We
met with the West Huron Wave to
see if they were interested in
working towards an amalgamated
group and they were interested."
Burns said that, if current numbers
are any indication, the Huron Heat
teams, which will include two teams
at each of the Fundamentals,
Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam and
Midget divisions, will have 150 to
160 players in the organization.
The Huron Heat label, which was
chosen after an extensive search for
the right name, is not official yet
according to Burns who said that the
name needed to be approved by the
OWHA first.
"The membership of the
[proposed] club was asked to submit
names," he said. "There were
between 45 and 50 names and logos
brought forward and a steering
committee, made up of members of
the three organizations, paired it
down to three or four ideas. It was
voted on from there. The Huron
Heat name and logo were chosen."
According to the organization's
website, huronheat.com, the two
teams at each level will be
categorized at tryouts and could
range from house league level to 'A'
level.
Being able to have teams of
different skill levels is part of what
drove the organizations to come
together according to early
correspondence from the group.
"It is our aim to provide multiple
teams in each division, thereby
creating an opportunity for all
female hockey players to play at a
level that is suited to their abilities,"
the BCH and BBMHA girl's hockey
Committee stated in an e-mail to its
players. "As a bigger and stronger
organization, we will be offering
tryouts at all age levels."
Currently the team is looking for
coaches for its inaugural season
starting later this year. Applications
can be filled out through the website.
The deadline for applications is
March 15, a month before try -outs
for the 2016/2017 season start.
The tryouts, which happen
immediately after the provincial
championships, will run April 13 to
May 1 according to the website.

Hockey players from Blyth and
Brussels were busy last week with
some finding success on the ice and
others having to stomach some tight
losses.
The Atom C Girls had two
matches as part of both their Ontario
Women's Hockey Association
(OWHA) playdowns last week and
Western Ontario Girls Hockey
League playoffs round robin.
Unfortunately, the team couldn't
find their rhythm, losing to the
Lucknow Wingham Girls team 4-1
and the Wallaceburg Lakers 3-1 on
Feb. 26 and 27, respectively. The
squad next plays on March 4 against
Ingersoll at the Seaforth and District
Community Centre at 7:30 p.m.
The PeeWee Girls team next take
on the Kent County Fillies on March
5 at 4 p.m. in Seaforth.
The Bantam B Girls team notched
two wins in its OWHA playdowns,
besting the South Huron Sabres both
home and on the road to sweep their
competitors in three games. Their
next challenge, the Orillia Hawks,
proved to be more difficult as the
team tied them 1-1 on Feb. 26. The
squad has a home -and -away
weekend playing Orillia on the road
on March 5 and coming home to
Blyth on March 6 to play at 3 p.m.
The Midget B Girls squad next
takes on the South Huron Sabres at
the Seaforth and District
Community Centre on March 4 at
8:30 p.m. before hitting the road to
take on the Mitchell Meteors on
March 6 at 9 p.m.
The Midget C Girls team had a
positive week, putting three of their
four games in the win column.
First, the squad bested the St.
Marys Rock 3-1 on Feb. 22 before
besting the Milverton Royals 3-0 on
Feb. 24. The Lucknow/Wingham
Girls, whom the local squad had
bested earlier in the month, put a
stop to the Midget C team's winning
streak beating them 2-1 on Feb. 25.
The loss was a minor setback,
however, as the Midget C squad
earned a 1-0 win over the Ilderton
Jets on Feb. 29.
The team next takes on Milverton
again on March 5 at 5:30 p.m. in
Brussels before taking to the road for
two road games against Mooretown
Lady Flags and the Lambton Shore
Predators on March 6 at 2:20 and
7:45 p.m. respectively.
The Midget Girls HL team will
take on the East Lambton Eagles on
March 5 at 2 p.m. in Hensall.
The Novice Rep Crusaders took
on the Walkerton Capitals but
couldn't repeat the win they had
earned earlier this month, falling 5-1
on Feb. 27.
The Novice Local League had
better luck, marking their fourth
playoff win, this time against
Zurich in Blyth on Feb. 27. The
