Agnes Schell celebrates 80th birthday A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Oh my, isn't the weather of Canada wonderful. It's presenting its best this year to make everybody happy. In two- and three-day spurts we've had storms to please the school crowd, we've had heaps of snow for the skiers, the snowshoers and the snow machines, then we had mild days to get moisture into the land and then sunny clear days for A tough loss The Blyth Brussels Atom Local League Black Crusaders took on the Bayfield, Clinton, Hensall (BCH) Ice Dogs 2 team on Friday night in a playoff game. Unfortunately, the team was bested 3-1. The Crusaders will get a chance to redeem themselves when they travel to Clinton to take on their opponents on March 8. (Denny Scott photo) At the Branch the travellers and it's now March. There is something about the quietness of winter that helps us stop and think about the big picture of life. Out our back window when the snow is fresh and clean, the travel of a mouse, under the snow can be followed as her trip takes zigs and zags in random, curving paths. Then just like in our lives, mousie needs to stay alert to changes. Cat tracks across the yard are part of the big picture. No incidents have been witnessed, so I'll not think too hard and just enjoy the tracks. Agnes Schell enjoyed her Sunday afternoon, after she got over the ad in The Citizen about her surprise birthday party. Number 80 is too much of a celebration to miss, so David, Shannon, Sophie and Oliver hosted an afternoon of family and friends sharing stories, lunch and laughs. Friends from the Blyth Festival Singers offered the "Happy Birthday" song with a little more finesse than most of us are used to hearing. So if you see Agnes on Wednesday, give her a birthday kiss. Goodbye Gertie Kellington. Lots of stories are being shared this week of how Gertie fit into our life stories. Memories and smiles were shared as we thought of the long time support she so willingly gave to our United Church. Retail memories at wild Bill Stephenson's store were but a part of Gertie's memories for us. Her Lodge days were precious and her time as a 5Rs volunteer are all part of the friend we called Gertie. FROM BRUSSELS We had the best trip to Hallville last week, we've ever had in winter. We celebrated the amount of snow (they were dealing with 51 centimetres at their place in a very short time) but it settled and melted over the weekend. We went to Loughlin's for coffee one morning and Aunt Marg stopped for a chat. We told her how well we like Shawn here at The Citizen, as well as catching up about my niece and nephews, all out west now, but as teenagers worked for the Loughlin's of Hallville. No skating on the canal this year, too sloppy. Bye now, Betty G.W.
