PAGE 24. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2016. From the Minister's Study Through suffering grow closer to God By Mark Royall Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church, Auburn "1 am glad when 1 suffer for you in my body, for 1 am participating in the sufferings of Christ that continue for His body, the church. Colossians 1:24" I am going to give you seven words that are packed with a book full of a profound understanding of how God responds to the suffering we bought into this world? Are you ready? Here are those seven words, "God allows what He does not will." God doesn't will sin but He allows human sin. Within the circle of God's sovereignty He gives us free- will. He allows us a choice. We can choose to love God or not. We can choose to be obedient to God or not. We can choose to follow God or not. Now, our choices always have consequences. This is where the suffering comes in. When God created the world it was good. There was no suffering, no disease, no death but when man allowed sin into the world, suffering entered with it. Sin is our choice. We own the consequences of the suffering because we bought into sin and sin comes with suffering. Even though God will allow suffering, He is not helpless and rendered ineffective by it. For God can use our suffering and turn it into victory. I saw an example of this a few weeks ago at the back of our church sanctuary as I watched a little girl learn to take her first steps. All of us as parents remember how exciting this was to watch our kids learn to walk. When our kids learn to walk we will allow them to stumble and even fall. You don't intend for them to fall or you would just push them over yourself. As a parent you know they will fall and they will get hurt but you make sure the conditions for falling won't t t t t t t t t t t t t t t Lining 11Uclte,T\ Cfiridialt reUatta% "Who to Blame when Bad Things Happen" Evangelical Missionary Church Tues. 7:30 pm Lisles' Small Group at R&S Howson's Wed. 10:00 am "Coffee Break" Women's Bible Study at CRC Sun, Apr. 10, 7:00 pm "Faith•In•Song" Christian Music Concert at CRC 10:30 a.m. -- Worship & Sunday School at 308 Blyth Rd. The Citizen Proudly Community -Owned Since 1985 1 defeat the purpose of them learning to walk. For example, you make sure there are no sharp table corners close by. You have them learn on soft carpet instead of hard tile floor. You don't put a kid learning to walk out on a busy road either because this would defeat the whole purpose. The suffering of a child falling and getting get back up eventually pays off because one day, walking happens. I love how God works things out for yesterday, in the very same spot where this little girl was learning to take her first steps, I watched with amazement as two older sisters were doing these incredible backflips and cartwheels. I would have joined them but I didn't want to steal their thunder. There would have been a day when the parents of these two sisters would have been there when they took their first steps. I am sure they watched their girls suffer falls time and time again but they got back and look BRUSSELS United Church WORSHIP SERVICE AND SUNDAY SCHOOL 11:00 am All Welcome Minister: Rev. The Cross of Jesus Christ is a great place to see how God used suffering and turned it into victory. God the Son did not just passively endure the suffering of the Cross. Jesus did not just merely accept the evil men did to Him...He used the evil. He turned His physical death into our eternal life. Jesus wrestled from the suffering of the Cross the greatest triumph and victory this world has ever seen. He turned death into resurrection. He turned Good Friday into Easter Sunday. And both of these days, the suffering of Good Friday and the victory of Easter Sunday, are days of triumph. Easter would not have happened without a Good Friday. We can take the attitude Jesus had where we take our suffering and offer it up to God the Father where we are trusting if He allows it He will turn our suffering into a victory. This is why the Apostle Paul says, ANGLICAN PARISH OF NEW BEGINNINGS BLYTH Trinity 9:15 am Church Office 519-357-4883 BRUSSELS St. John's 11:15 am Church Office 519-887-6862 Everyone Welcome! COME WORSHIP WITH US! "...I am glad when I suffer for you in my body". The French have this saying when translated into English says something like this, "To suffer passes. To have suffered, never passes." What does this mean? It means the suffering I endured trying to learn to walk was temporary. It passed. In fact, I can't even remember it. But the value of being able to walk every day is always something I value everyday. I can tell you this, it has been through times of suffering where I grew closer to God and His Word. I know I am much stronger, much closer, much more assured of God's goodness and presence because of those times I had suffered. Rant God in those times and I trusted Him and He never failed. So as crazy as it may sound to some people, I can say today, I am glad 1 suffered. BUY? SELL?
