(Denny Scott photo) Bantam girls take Silver Stick gold By Denny Scott The Citizen Earlier this month, the Bantam 'C' BCH Ice Stars, comprised of girls from Blyth, Brussels, Bayfield, Clinton and Hensall earned a gold - medal finish at the Saugeen Shores Silver Stick Tournament. The team played five games to earn the gold medal, finishing against Mitchell with an overtime victory by a score of 1-0 on Sunday, Feb. 7. After being held to a 0-0 tie throughout the game, the teams needed nearly the entirety of a 10 - minute overtime period to decide a winner for the gold medal game. Fortunately for BCH, they were able to score a goal seven minutes in, taking the game and the trophy. Earlier that day, the team had earned their place in the finals with a 2-1 win over South Bruce Blades. The team found an early 1-0 lead which was held late into the third period when South Bruce managed a tying goal. Following a 10 -minute overtime period, the squads each sent out their three brightest for a shootout. Unfortunately, nothing was solved there either and, on a fourth shooter, BCH was able to mark the final goal of the game while their goalie shut the door on the fourth consecutive shooter. Coach Rob Gordon later posted to the team's website thanking the tournament organizers, the parents who supported the team and the team itself, calling himself a proud coach and parent. Currently the team is in the middle of their Ontario Western Hockey Association (OWHA) playdowns and Western Ontario Girls Hockey League (WOGHL) Playoffs with games scheduled later this week against the South Huron Sabres on Feb. 27 in Blyth at 11:30 a.m. and the Lambeth Lancers on Feb. 28 in London at 7:30 p.m. Local teams try for gold in local, provincial playoffs With Old Man Winter's receding snow -line starting to show, local hockey players are entering the home stretch for their year-end tournaments and local squads in both the Blyth -Brussels Minor Hockey (BBMHA) Association and the amalgamated BBMHA and Bayfield-Clinton-Hensall (BCH) girls hockey clubs are no exception. The ultimate grudge match The Blyth Bantam Girls broomball team took on the closest -to -home competitors a player can have: their family. In a special game on Saturday, the girls welcomed family members to the ice to show them a thing or two about the game.
