Ice time for all ages North Huron has historically been a great place to be on the Family Day weekend and this year was no different. With the exception of some stormy weather on Friday night and Saturday, the municipality was full of fun things to do on Sunday and Monday, including free public skating at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Taking advantage of the holiday Monday on the ice was the Plunkett family, led by Cindy, who facilitated young Austin's transportation, followed by Leanne Plunkett, left, and Teresa Dykstra. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Dutch -Canadian group plans 2017 celebration By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen A group of dedicated volunteers is planning a Dutch -Canadian celebration to coincide with Canada's 150th birthday in 2017 and they're looking for support from Huron County. Sid Bruinsma and Jim Rutledge spoke to Huron County Council at its Feb. 3 meeting and detailed their multi -faceted request and provided more information about the celebration. Rutledge, who is the author of The Men of Huron: A Book of Honour and Remembrance, says that after working on his first book to honour Huron's soldiers in World War II, he has since directed his attention to local soldiers who fought in World War I. "My passion for the last 10 years has been to honour our veterans," he told councillors after officially presenting council with a signed copy of his book. Bruinsma detailed the celebration, which is set to take place in Goderich at Liberation Park. "We have invited Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands to be our guest. We would like her to unveil a plaque commemorating the surrender of the German troops in the Netherlands to end the Second World War in the Netherlands," the group's letter reads. "And also to unveil a new sign, `Liberation Memorial Park' at the park on Victoria Street in Goderich." Bruinsma and Rutledge explained that inviting someone like the princess is not a simple process and needs to be approved through the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stephane Dion. As part of the process, the organization was requesting a letter of support from Huron County to be placed on the event's website, which also contains a petition, that would help give the request traction. Council approved a motion that would see Warden Paul Gowing sign a letter of support for the request, which will then be posted on the website and forwarded to the appropriate levels of the federal government. The second part of the request was for funding, originally in the amount of $5,000, but Bruinsma told councillors that he had since decided to increase that amount for a very specific reason. Bruinsma told council that he was asking council to contribute $10 for every person from Huron County who laid down his/her life for the cause of World War I, which is just over 700 people. The amount, in turn, would be just over $7,000. Council accepted the request and authorized that a staff report be prepared ahead of the grant being considered during the county's budget deliberations. Bruinsma said the money would go towards promoting the event and securing musical entertainment and equipment for the 2017 celebration.
