Walkerburn Club plan for 100th anniversary
The January meeting of the
Walkerburn Club was cancelled due
to the weather. The next meeting will
be Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the home of
Pat Hunking. Ila Cunningham will
be the president of the month and
Mary Elder will be on program. The
club members were pleased to
receive new information from Janis
Vodden about the club that we didn't
know.
We knew that the first meeting of
the Walkerburn Club was in July
1919. It was formed to help the Red
Cross. Margaret Jackson (Margaret
Kai's aunt) and two Scott girls from
the Walkerburn area went to Toronto
to teach school. During the war, the
three ladies formed a club to make
items for the soldiers. They called
their club "Walker Burn".
The ladies here contributed to their
efforts for awhile and the two groups
did a lot of knitting. One of the
Toronto ladies put their name and
address into one of the socks. To her
amazement, the recipient contact
her when he got home
and eventually they married.
After the war was over, the ladies
here noted other needs in their
community and formed the present
club and we are still going 97 years
later. As well at Margaret Jackson's
request, the ladies still remade
clothing, etc. to send to the children
in Toronto. The club still tries to help
out by making quilts and lap quilts
and monetary donations wherever
members see a need. The club is
looking forward to its 100th
anniversary in 2019.
