The Citizen
Blyth resident Bekki Decevito will
be going to Zimbabwe as part of a
mission trip through the Hanover
Pentecostal Church and she is
looking for assistance from her
community.
Decevito will be leaving on the
19 -day trip on May 7 along with
seven other missionaries for the
Village of Hope in Zimbabwe,
marking the 10th year the church has
been involved with the project.
"Each one of us has our own
general thing we do as part of the
trip," she said. "Two of us will be
helping with the village through
construction and repair jobs and
doing any small things they need.
Every morning some of us will be
doing a feeding program for the kids
in the school to help keep them
healthy. Then we make our way to
an area in the village where the kids
who aren't sponsored or can't go to
school are and do the same thing."
She said the volunteers do crafts
with the children, bring sports
equipment and play with them and
do everything they can to try and
Seeking help
Blyth's Bekki Decevito is looking for community support as
she heads to Zimbabwe as part of an annual mission trip
run by the Hanover Pentecostal Church. Decevito needs to
raise $3,000 for her expenses, as well as additional funds
to help support the children of the Village of Hope, the
destination for the missionaries on the annual trip. (Photo

money for Zimbabwe mission
make a difference in their lives.
In a letter to The Citizen, Decevito
explained she is excited for the
opportunity because of all the
success the previous teams have had.
The missionaries take supplies as
well as funds that have helped to
support projects around the village,
which is just south of an orphanage
called Zvimba.
The orphanage, prior to the first
trips, had needed funding, had no
working washrooms or a kitchen and
cooking had to be done over a fire
built in a house without a roof.
That first team decided to help
however it could, using extra funds
from the trip to pay for schooling for
as many of the children as possible
and providing basic supplies and
foods as well. They also paid for a
plumber to repair the water supply
for the village.
One of the biggest challenges for
the village is basic supplies. To
combat that, the team takes whatever
items they can bring with them,
including clothing, bedding, kitchen
supplies and equipment and shoes.
They also bring funds which help
keep a local school open, paying
workers and expanding the village.
The missionaries also work while
at home to find sponsorship for the
children there and have found
support for 40 children to have
medical support and education.
Decevito is looking for $3,000 to
cover her expenses for the trip and
her living expenses while in
Zimbabwe.
Each member of the team is
responsible for raising funds for the
trip. Decevito and the church will be
holding events to help raise funds for
the village including a Valentine
concert that was held over the
weekend and a special "sugar bush"
day focused on maple treats and
outdoor events in March.
Decevito said being a part of the
project this year is especially
important to her because her
grandmother Donna Duquette, who
made the trip for a decade, says this
year will be her last.
"My grandma has been involved
for 10 years and this is going to be
the last time she's involved," she
said.
Decevito said her grandmother has
been a big supporter of the village
for the last 10 years and that her
involvement has even created a
small side business that supports the
trips.
"The big thing for me is that my
family is really involved in this," she
said. "Both my grandparents have
gone. My grandma, for her first trip,
started making butter tarts to
fundraise for it. Now she has a
business for it. She sells the butter
tarts out of her house and all the
money goes back to the village. She
has made thousands of butter tarts."
Decevito's sister, Victoria Post,
has also been involved in the project
for a few years, and has shared
photos with her sister which was
what motivated Decevito to be a part
of the project.
