Cold day, warm a\\1■6s breakfast As part of the annual North Huron Snowarama tradition, the Londesborough Lions were early to rise and serve everyone breakfast before they hit the snowmobile trails for the day. Spending the day outside in their warmest clothes were John Hoggart, left, and Kelly Boven, who made sure everyone hit the trails with a full stomach. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Happy Gang to meet Feb. 23 PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 The Happy Gang Seniors will hold their February meeting at Londesborough United Church on Wednesday, Feb. 23, beginning with a pot luck meal at 12:30 p.m. New members are welcome. The village extends condolences to Murray Govier on the passing of his sister, Carol Gross of Blyth. Raymond and Hunter Garvey are excited to welcome a new sister to their family. Parents Ryan and Janet Garvey are just trying to get enough sleep as the household adjusts to the demands of a new baby. Congratulations! The Garvey family lives in the Armstrong house, so that means one more pupil for Hullett Central. Villagers received word last week that a former minister of Londesborough United had passed away. Rev. Stan MacDonald ministered to this faith community from 1970 through 1979. He was a well -loved pastor and many have kept in touch with him over the years. Following his years preaching in Hensall and Corunna, Rev. Stan retired to London. He was Minister Emeritus at Siloam United Church for many years and that is where his funeral was held on Saturday, Feb. 13. More than one minister who followed Stan in the Londesborough pulpit have said Church service moved for AGM Concern about the weather and the condition of the roads obviously affected church attendance at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, Feb. 14. The senior choir was present and sang the anthem, "Saving Grace". During the children's time at the front with Rev. Fletcher, the love shared/expressed on Valentine's Day through cards, flowers and gifts was discussed. Terry reminded the children that on more than one occasion when Jesus was on earth and in the company of others, God spoke and revealed to all His love for Jesus. Christians should remember God's example and express our love to those around us. We are special and precious to God and we need to share that love with the whole world. The message to the adults was titled, "Being Tempted". The supporting scripture was Luke 4: 1-13, the account of Christ's 40 days in the desert being tempted by the devil. The responsive psalm was Psalm 91. Temptation is a normal part of life. It is important to recognize it as such and learn to deal with it. Christ's humility was tempted in the desert. He needed to confront who He was and where His life was headed. The Devil tempted Christ with power. Life tempts us with power, worldly goods, position, etc. The Kingdom of God is won by love not power or goods. That love in us is stronger than temptation/sin and takes us to the cross. During this Lenten season Rev. Fletcher urged congregants to create a fresh face for God in our daily lives; to rely on God who draws near to us in times of temptation; to use the season wisely in the spirit of love to all. The morning service Londesborough United on Feb. will be at 9:30 a.m. to accommodate at the annual meeting at 21 Knox in Auburn. Dishing out the good stuff On Pancake Tuesday, several groups throughout the region had special events going on including the Londesborough Lions. The group, at the Londesborough Hall last Tuesday, served up a special pancake dinner. Shown working with the main course is Irene Pawlik. (Dennyscottphoto) they felt his presence still. I experienced some difficulty purchasing Valentines for my grandchildren this year. Not just because they have gotten older, but because Valentine styles have changed. I guess change is inevitable in all areas of our lives. Since then I came across a little poem that speaks to that very thing titled "Special Valentines". "Valentines of long ago were trimmed with silk and lace, Or featured hearts of velvet in sentimental grace, Styles and shapes may vary but Cupid's cards still say, Their universal language the love lines of the day." I found another poem which is too long to use in this space. However, the idea in it is worth passing on. The writer mentions that there are other ways to say, "I love you" besides a card — a smile, a cheerful word, a helping hand, a tender glance, etc. Then she suggests "And if we often take the time to give these friendly signs, The world will soon be brightened by our daily valentines."
