As part of North Huron's annual Family Day program, the
Blyth and District Community Centre was home to a game
of fun broomball, which was fit for players of any age and
skill level. Blyth's Rob Kolkman kept order on the ice as the
game's referee, overseeing the tight -scoring affair. (Shawn

Local marks Leap Year birthday
For the general population, a leap
year can represent a struggle: trying
to remember that there is an extra
day in February and not letting it
mess up their schedules. For those
who call Feb. 29 their birthday,
however, it can cause a lot of
headaches.
Take Dana Weber, who runs The
Village Barber in Blyth and was
born on Feb. 29. She is celebrating a
"big" birthday this year, though she
wouldn't share exactly which one
during an interview with The
Citizen.
Weber's mother tipped The Citizen
off to her birth date, saying that her
daughter might have some fun
memories to share about the unique
date.
"I usually celebrate on Feb. 28
when I do celebrate," she said "I've
no plans to celebrate this year
though. My husband and I were
thinking of going to Las Vegas, but
with the way the dollar is, that didn't
seem to be a great idea."
Weber said when she was young
the only thing she remembered
about her actual birthday, which
came around once every four years,
was that the weather was always
sour.
"I don't know what it's about, but
it always stormed whenever there
was actually a Feb. 29," she said. "I
guess that's just luck."
Weber said that most of what she
runs into with having a birthday on
Feb. 29 are problems with the
government.
Aside from a story where Weber
and her husband ran into a funny
situation at the border with a guard
whose sister had a similar birthday,
she said the government can't quite

Students to travel to Taiwan
Forty students from across the
Avon Maitland District School
Board (AMDSB), including three
local travellers, will be heading to
Taipei, Taiwan as part of a unique
learning opportunity through the
board.
The 10 -day trip starts March 12
and includes special educational
experiences for the students
including classes in Mandarin, Kung
Fu, Tai Chi and other cultural staples
of the community.
Open to students from Grades 8 to
Grade 12, the program is part of the
AMDSB's International Educational
Program.
Locally, Claire Scrimgeour, Katie
Roth and Sydney Hunking are
attending the event. Scrimgeour
spoke with The Citizen about how
she got involved with the trip and
what she hopes to get out of it.
"There was an opportunity at
school to try and get into the
program and I thought it looked
interesting so I signed up," she said.
"We had to write a paragraph about
going and I wrote about never having
done anything like this before."
Students will be staying at the
Chientin Youth Activity Centre,
which, according to the school
board, is within walking distance of
the Ming Chuan University, one of
the program's partners.
Scrimgeour said that while the
entire program looked interesting,
she is most interested in visiting
some of the unique attractions in
Taipei.
"I'm excited to go to all the spots
that I wouldn't get to see otherwise,"
she said. "It should be really
interesting and I'm looking forward
to it."
Locations the students will be
visiting include the National Palace
Museum, the Huashan Creative
Park, the Taipei Zoo and Maokong
Gondola and many other locations.
Scrimgeour is excited for the
opportunity to learn about the
country and has started her research
already, looking into the currency
and language spoke there. She has
also started to prepare her luggage
and, while the time in Taipei will be
a unique experience, getting there
will also be one for Scrimgeour.
"I've never been on a plane
before," she said. "I'm just a bit
nervous about that."
With flight times longer than 15
hours Scrimgeour's introduction to
flying will be an extensive one.
Look to future issues of The
Citizen to see how the trip went for
the local students.
The Christliest life
(J.R. Miller, "Christian Essentials")
"Give thanks in everything, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."
1 Thessalonians 5:18
Thanksgiving should never be lacking in a Christian life. It is not enough to
observe one day in the year for `Thanksgiving' although that is a beautiful thing to
do. Nor is it enough to put a sentence of thanksgiving into our daily prayers,
although that, also, is proper.
It is the grateful spirit which pleases God, the spirit that is always full of praise.
There should be a note of thanksgiving running through all our life.
Too many of us go to God only with requests, with our burdens, our worries, our
troubles; while we but rarely go to Him with any word of thanks.
We are not to be thankful only for the pleasant and agreeable things that come into
our days --we are to be thankful, too, for the things that appear to us to be
adversities. "Give thanks in everything." That means...in the sad days, as well as
in the glad days, when clouds are in the sky, as well as when the sunshine is
pouring everywhere.
It is said here that this is the will of God for us. The Christliest life --is the one
that is always keyed to the note of praise and thanksgiving.
