Family Day a time for activities
A NOTE FROM BETTY

Outside at this moment is a
Christmas card scene — big fluffy
snowflakes meandering to the
ground. Very nice.
This blurb is getting done on
Friday, so everyone can relax on
Monday for Family Day. Make plans
to enjoy the day, enjoy each other
and the winter fun just waiting for
you. Check around, there are lots of
neat things to keep you fit, busy,
entertained and out of the house. So
check with the museum and
recreation folks to get an idea of
your choices.
Valentine's Day is over for another
year which means that Kathy and
Ethan Nichol, Clif Hetherington and
myself are another year older. Good
memories are making me smile as I
think of the other two Valentine's
birthday boys that used to share this
date. Jack Cardiff and Ken Graber
have made good memories for many,
so think of them and smile.
Graham Work is another fellow
who died this month. A life member
of our community, Graham was one
of the stable things here. His life was
agriculture and he was supportive of
Melville WMS to hold
Springtime supper
The January meeting of the
Melville Presbyterian Church Guild
and WMS was held at the home of
Dona Knight on Jan. 19. A delicious
potluck supper was enjoyed by all to
start off the new year.
The meeting was opened with
everyone repeating the WMS
Purpose, followed by the call to
worship titled, "You are a Gracious
and Merciful God: read by Elaine
Armstrong. Elaine Armstrong read
the scripture taken from Nehemiah
9: 28-31, followed by the meditation
"God, who is Gracious and
Merciful".
Elaine Armstrong led in prayer
and Linda Garland gave the topic
"Syrian Refugees", she explained
the definition of a refugee, an
internationally displaced person, a
permanent resident, an immigrant
and a migrant. Each person was
given a story to read about a person
and the ladies decided which
category that person would be in.
Events cancelled due to storm
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It was a hard call to make on
Friday to cancel the Friday evening
supper, with the weather changing
every other hour. The call had to be
made by lunch time to get the meat
in the oven and the call was to
cancel. When 5 p.m. rolled around, it
was storming like crazy and it turns
out the decision was the right one.
The Cadet Corp 2967 had planned
a Valentine's dinner and dance for
Friday evening as well and the bad
weather forced the cancellation of
the event as well.
Congratulations to Ron and Daisy
Schmidt who qualified to advance to
provincial darts. They, along with
Ken and Linda Bird attended the
district dart event in Elora two
weeks ago. The four played as a
team and did very well and just
missed advancing to further play in
team competition. Ron and Daisy
played doubles and that is the event
they advance in to play in Sutton in
June.
The work progresses at the
Brussels Legion Branch with the
accessible addition. It is coming
along nicely and the Branch was
pleased to receive a contribution
from the Brussels Lions Club.
The Lions are also hosting a
breakfast at the Legion next
weekend with proceeds going to the
building project. They will be
accepting donations for the breakfast
and the project. We hope all Legion
members and members of the
community come out and support
the Lions and the Branch.
Jobs Branch members are able to
catch up on are also happening.
Sprucing up with new paint in a few
places makes everything looked
clean and bright.
The executive met on Tuesday
evening to hold a special meeting to
discuss the upcoming fish fry
season. It is a multi -faceted job
requiring more help. Members of the
executive volunteered to take on
different aspects of the job to spread
the work around. Groups wishing to
book a fish fry will book through the
Branch by speaking with Sandra
Josling. Scheduling workers for the
meals will be Debbie Ross and Lisa
Glanville looking after fryers. Deb
Cann and Jo -Ann McDonald will
look after ordering supplies, thawing
fish and packing the needed
supplies.
It takes a group effort to get a
major fundraiser for the Branch
organized for the year.

all things. Community events were a

and a friendly greeting with a smile
were his gift to us. Farewell Graham.
