Carter presented with lifetime UCW membership PEOPLE AROUND LONDESBORO By BRENDA RADFORD Call 523-4296 The Londesborough UCW acknowledged the dedication of one of their members at their Jan. 25 meeting. Dorothy Carter was presented with a life membership pin by the group for her service to the UCW. In her casual and informal manner Morag Watt spoke passionately about South Africa. Morag has fallen in love with the country and still marvels at how at home she feels when she spends her summers there. She has visited this country six times in five years. The country of South Africa was settled by the British and Dutch as a stop -off port for the spice trade. That was the start of the multicultural aspect and the complex social system of the country. There continues to be a great deal of animosity between the various races. This diversity resulted in Apartheid Stretch On Saturday at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, the Blyth Brussels Novice Rep Crusaders took on their neighbours to the south in the form of the Bayfield Clinton Hensall (BCH) Ice Dogs. It was a tight contest, with BCH squeaking out a win on the road by the slimmest of margins, 4-3. (Vicky Bremner photo) which controlled the government for years. Morag feels Nelson Mandela, who was responsible for eliminating Apartheid, was a true gift to the country and the world. Since the eradication of Apartheid, there have been problems with the transition from a government controlled by whites to one controlled by blacks Consequently there are many inequalities in employment and wages, housing, education and health care. The animosity between the groups is unfortunate considering how beautiful the country is and how extremely friendly the peoples are. The peoples of South Africa are filled with the joy of living every moment of every day. Morag spends time each summer visiting schools and hospitals in the area she visits. Her current pet project is raising funds here in Canada for an isolation ward at the Clanwilliam Hospital. Barb Bosman and Lena Nesbitt chose a reflection "Hearing Loss" for the women to contemplate as the new year starts. The reading began with the story of a woman who was having difficulty hearing and learned from her audiologist that she needed hearing aids. To put off wearing hearing aids might result in her brain losing some of its hearing response. The longer she waited the harder it would be to adjust to the help. In Mark 4:9 Jesus says "Those who have ears to hear, let him hear." When it comes to our faith sometimes we require hearing aids as well to hear God's message to/for us. We can develop a faith loss. Jesus' ideas, His message of love and forgiveness, was new for the people of His time. Similarly we FROM LONDESBORO need to re -hear His message, to open our hearts to accept new teachings. The message was that we need to listen with new ears on Sunday mornings and see with new eyes the words of the Bible. Decide this year you want to hear well God's words. During the business part of the evening it was decided that the Mission and Service allocation for 2016 for the group would be the same as in 2015. Due to the increasing cost of groceries, a slight change was made in catering prices. The Londesborough UCW will host the Huron -Perth UCW Presbyterial's Spring Fling the evening of April 4. In preparation for this there will be shine up day on March 14. The group's next meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 15 beginning at 7 p.m. with coffee, etc. Darby scored 'Love Me Tender' under wife's name As this is the love month and movie at least once and the song Sunday is Valentine's Day, I decided to have a look into a song all readers will know that was written for Elvis Presley for his first movie role, a western, originally titled The Reno Brothers. Hollywood took a chance in 1956 deciding to make movies with Elvis, but they recognized they would need to have him sing if fans would watch the movie. So the producers hired Ken Darby to pen a quartet of songs. Thinking it below his reputation to write for a rock and roller, having just finished The King and 1, he submitted the musical score under his wife's name. He may have regretted this as the movie title became the same as one of the songs, "Love Me Tender". Keeping love in mind, neighbours of the Laxton family who lost their home to fire on Saturday, Jan. 30, hope to have a drop-in 'day of support' for them at the Londesborough Hall. Haward and Anna have two daughters and are expecting a third child any day. Consequently the date for the drop- in hasn't been set. Anna wishes to wait until the baby arrives. Currently the family is living in a farmhouse further down the 13th, the house where Haward's parents had lived at one time which was sitting empty. I will keep you up to date on this event.
