The Citizen
On Feb. 2, Frank and Kay
Konarski of RR1, Blyth marked an
anniversary seldom reached in this
day and age: 70 years of marriage.
The couple celebrated the rare
milestone just a few days earlier
with a special lunch with members
of their family at the Benmiller Inn
on Sunday, Jan. 31.
It was on Feb. 2, 1946 when
Kazimiera (Kay) Jaskula and
Franciszek (Frank) Konarski
committed themselves to one
another at a displaced persons camp
in Germany.
Kay, the Polish -born daughter of
John and Helen Jaskula, and Frank,
the Polish -born son of Michael and
Fransceska Konarski were married
at the camp by a Catholic priest and
the wedding was attended by fellow
couples and friends also living at the
camp. Frank was 27 and Kay was 18
at the time of the ceremony.
The priest required the couple to
have rings before the ceremony
could be performed, so Frank hand-
made rings for himself and Kay out
of copper pipe.
Being in a displaced persons
camp, Frank and Kay weren't able to
go on a honeymoon.
Frank and Kay moved to Belgium
in 1948 where Frank worked in
some of the country's coal mines.
They soon moved to Canada in 1950
and settled in Toronto.
It didn't take Frank and Kay long
to find property in Huron County,
however, as they bought a farm on
Hullett-McKillop Road within their
first year of being in Canada.
While the couple purchased the
farm, they stayed in Toronto, Frank
working as an upholsterer and Kay
as a seamstress, until the farm was
paid off.
Frank and Kay moved to the
Hullett-McKillop Road farm in
1954, and that same year they
bought a second farm, on Bandon
Line. They would move onto the
Bandon Line farm a few years later,
which is where they live today.
Over the years both Frank and Kay
worked on the farm, which began as
a beef cattle operation, but then later
transitioned into cash cropping.
Both eventually retired from
farming, Frank when he was 88
years old and he began
sharecropping the farmland with
Middegaal Farms.
Frank and Kay had four children,
Richard, Irene, Betty and Teresa and
seven grandchildren.
During Frank's time in the
community, he served as a trustee
for School House #7 of Hullett
Township, while Kay volunteered
her time as a member of the Catholic
Women's League in Blyth and as
part of the Burns Women's Group of
Londesborough United Church.
Frank, now 97, and Kay, now 88,
celebrated their anniversary amongst
a group of family members and close
friends at the Benmiller Inn last
Sunday.
