Free skating
Four-year-old Tyson Cook enjoyed some time on the ice at the Belgrave Community Centre
on Saturday during free skating. Cook strapped on his blades of steel, grabbed a stick and
shot the puck around to make the most of his time skating. (Vicky Bremner photo)

another highlight of the winter
months. At the end of the day, two
bus loads of students head over to
the arena for an hour of skating.
"Skating with my friends is what I
like the best," said student Megan,
while Sydney and Jace like the
races.
Abby and Michael think playing
tag with their friends is the highlight
of skating while classmate Brooke
mentioned that the trip to the snack
bar is what she likes best about each
Monday afternoon.
Students in all grades are learning
skipping skills and tricks during
gym classes as they prepare for the
upcoming Jump Rope for Heart
activity later in February. Any
sponsor money raised will go to the
Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Walks down the hallway at any
time of the day reveal students
practising their writing, public
speaking or story -telling skills in
preparation for this year's speech
competition in mid-February.
The monthly themed assembly
focused on "Children of the
Promise" this month and saw our
guest speaker, Pastor Kevin from
Exeter, lead us in some reflections
on the gift of God's grace that makes
us His children.
Each student had a chance to
respond to that by writing what
he/she wanted to do for God out of
thankfulness for this gift.
"I want to work on putting others
before myself," shared Nicola, while
Ben, a Grade 1 student, wants to
pray for others.
Leigha wants to focus on living
her life for God, not for herself.
If you drop into the school over
the noon hour, you will see our
students busy with a variety of
activities including the robotics
club, band club, chess club and the
worship team that helps lead singing
at our assemblies and a few local
worship services.
And finally, the last time you
heard from us, we were anticipating
snow days and once again, Huron
County winters have not
disappointed. At the time of writing,
we have experienced three snow
days, which is way down from the
seven at this time last year but, that
doesn't discourage students
Emma and Lauren from hoping for
more.
"I love it when it's snowing hard
at night and I kind of anticipate a
snow day. And then the next day
getting to sleep in is a bonus," said
Emma, while Lauren likes snow
days because she can catch up on
homework and all kinds of other
things.

IPM theme named
`Showing the Bounty
of Huron County'
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
The theme for the 2017 Brussels
Fall Fair, which will partner with
and take place at the Intemational
Plowing Match (IPM) in Walton, is
"Showing the Bounty of Huron
County".
The theme was decided by
members of the Brussels
Agricultural Society at their annual
meeting Friday night at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community
Centre.
There was significant discussion
surrounding the theme. While some
members felt it should incorporate
the IPM, others felt that the fair
should maintain its own identity and
that the theme should be similar to a
theme that would be chosen if the
fair wasn't going to be held at the
IPM.
Newly -elected President Matt
Cardiff listed a number of
established IPM themes for its five
days: Celebrate the best of Huron
County, Heroes, Hockey, Heritage
and Canada's 150th (also in 2017).
There were over 10
recommendations, some making
reference to the fact that the Brussels
Fall Fair is, in fact, older than
Canada (2017 will be the 156th fair),
while others focused on soil, which
will be a big theme at the match.
Some themes aimed to incorporate
the theme of the IPM, but members
felt that the theme should be for the
people of Brussels, since it is these
people who will be exhibiting at the
fair.
Eventually, the group settled on
"Showing the Bounty of Huron
County", which won out by a close
vote.
