What originally started as a fun way to get together with Lions and other people looking to have fun in February changed in 2011 when local men Blake Hesselwood and John Bokhout were killed in a house fire in Alberta. Since then, the tournament has been in memoriam to the two. The two Blyth men had moved to Alberta to find employment in the oil industry and succeeded then moved into a rural home near Bonnyville, Alberta. Tragedy struck not long after when the two lost their lives in a blaze that took the century - old home they lived in. The tournament, which is quickly approaching, is filling up fast according to organizer Mark Nesbit. "This year we're looking to have between 14 and 16 teams," he said in an interview with The Citizen late last week. "We're sitting with 10 teams right now, so there are a few spots still open." Jack raced his Super Modified stock car for 11 years from 1957 to 1967, winning the first big feature race at Flamboro Speedway, which opened for racing that year in 1962. That was the first of many wins for him at Flamboro, racing four or five times a week during his racing career. He also raced at Delaware, Nilestown, Bridgeport and at the Canadian National Exhibition track in Toronto. The Fireball 500 race at Flamboro Speedway in the mid-1960s was one of his greatest career wins. The red and white number 73 race car was owned by brother Casey McCutcheon, truck and trailer driver was Ron Huether and mechanics were Gerald and Mel McArter. The car's signature Woody Woodpecker painted on the side of the car attracted many fans. Jack's racing career ended after the 1967 season when many tracks switched to late model cars and a new car would have to be built to race in his class. Jack and his family enjoyed a social time and delicious meal followed by the award presentations. Now and then Brussels' Jack McCutcheon was named to the Flamboro Speedway Hall of Fame late last month for his 11 years of racing Super Modified stock cars. Jack, shown here in an undated photo from his earlier days of racing, drove car number 73 in Flamboro as well as Delaware, Nilestown, Bridgeport and Toronto.
