Fricker tells of how all hands' works important
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Jan. 31
were Fred Hakkers and Marilyn
Craig. Ushering were Nancy
Hakkers and Nicole Kerr. Susanna
Lyman was guest organist and Katie
Dockstader was choir director.
Bryce Glousher ran the power point.
Guest speaker was Gail Fricker, a
student minister at Atlantic School
of Theology in Halifax and currently
at Parkview United Church in
Stratford.
Fricker welcomed everyone to
church on Sunday. The call to
worship was repeated responsively.
Tanner Brooks was invited to light
the three candles on the altar table.
The first hymn "Come In, Come In
and Sit Down" was sung. Everyone
was invited to greet one another.
Fricker drew everyone's attention
to the announcements with special
mention that the Holy Rollers are
starting to make meat pies this
month - Feb. 17 for beef pies; March
9, turkey; March 30, beef; fruit pies
can also be ordered. Pickup time is
from 9-11 a.m. Call Donna Moore
519-523-9855 to order.
The hymn "Jesus' Hands Were
Kind Hands" was sung followed by
the opening prayer said responsively
and the singing of the Lord's Prayer.
The next hymn was "In Loving
Partnership We Come" The
scripture readings were from Luke
10: 30b - 37 and Luke 4: 31-37.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time.
Fricker had a bag of things in her
hand and asked the children to take
one out. There was a cup and saucer,
a bandaid, a chocolate bar and
others. She asked the children what
they thought that these things would
do. She then explained that all of the
things would make you feel better if
you were hurting. They would give
you comfort. The children repeated a
prayer along with the congregation
and went downstairs for their time of
fellowship. The choir sang the
anthem "God Our Father."
Fricker's message to the
congregation was "Healing Hands."
She asked everyone to take a look at
their hands. She said some of our
hands made bread while others were
builder's hands.
Our hands do many things. She
told the story of a little girl who
thought her hands were ordinary
hands. There was a lady in the little
girl's village who was quite an age
and her eyesight was going. The
older lady had a birthday coming up,
so the children decided to make her
things with their hands. The little girl
with the ordinary hands could not
think of anything to make so she
went to the river and sat down to
watch the river.
Before long she thought she
heard the river singing. When it was
time to go home the little girl
could not get to sleep and finally
when she did she dreamed of

the peaceful river.
The little girl didn't go to the
celebration as she had nothing to
give the old lady. Finally she decided
to go and see the
older lady and took her a jar of
colours.
The older lady said that this was a
beautiful gift of love. In the
scriptures, the Good Samaritan had
healing hands. He bandaged the
wounds and took the beaten man to
an inn and then came back a few
days later to see if he was alright. He
had healing hands and comforting
words.
We should take the time to do
something for others. Jesus took the
time to heal the sick. We should
share the love of God with others

FROM BLYTH
Television, the Great Life -Waster
Television is one of the greatest life -wasters of the modern age. And, of course, the
Internet is running to catch up, and may have caught up. You can be more selective
on the Internet, but you can also select worse things with only the Judge of the
universe watching. TV still reigns as the great life -waster. The main problem with
TV is not how much smut is available, though that is a problem. Just the ads are
enough to sow fertile seeds of greed and lust, no matter what program you're
watching. The greater problem is banality. A mind fed daily on TV diminishes.
Your mind was made to know and love God. Its facility for this great calling is
ruined by excessive TV. The content is so trivial and so shallow that the capacity
of the mind to think worthy thoughts withers, and the capacity of the heart to feel
deep emotions shrivels. (John Piper, "Don't Waste Your Life" 2003)
"I have kept my feet from every evil path, so that I might obey Your Word."
